Muhammad Safwan Harun is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Fiqh and Usul, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Malaysia. He was born in Perak, Selama and growing up there. His early studies began at Selama, Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Jalan Menteri and later at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Kerian, Semanggol, Perak. Then, he moved to Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gopeng, Perak. He then was offered to pursue foundation study at University of Malaya, Nilam Puri for two years. He then pursued his bachelor’s degree, in Fiqh and Usul Department, Academy of Islamic Studies, UM and obtained his first degree in 2016. He then offered to pursue his Doctoral degree at the same university and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in November 2019. He is the third son of Harun bin Mohd Nor and Zainab bt Mohd Nasir. He is also a husband to Nazratun Naimah binti Jahuri and a father to Nur Sumayyah, Mohd Shakir and Muhammad Shatir. He builds up his expertise in Maqasid al-Shari’ah (theoretical and applied studies) and usul al-Fiqh at the department of Fiqh and Usul, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Malaysia. He also being actively involved in writing journal articles, book chapters, articles in newspaper and presentations in national seminars as well as international seminars. He has written around 90 publications in total as of October 2024. In addition, his research tendency covers the field of Contempoary Fiqh (worship, ethics, zakat and muamalat). As of 2024, he was involved around 11 research grants from various sources, including the Fundamental Research Grant Shceme (FRGS), the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (JAWI), the Faculty Research Grant (GPF), and several more. He is very active in providing consultation in a few projects, such as the panel of Shariah Glossary (I-Sign) for the Hearing OKU by Institut Latihan Islam, Bangi, and the expert panel on the construction of the Modul Minda Maqasid by the Maqasid Shariah Division, JAKIM. He is also actively involved as a speaker in a series of internal and international seminars and talks to provide training in his field of expertise, particularly maqasid al-syariah, with civil servants and students at IPTA. In order to promote a broader academic relationship, he is involved in a number of international activities, including serving as editor of the Journal of Religious, Social, and Cultural Studies and the Khazanah Journal of Islamic Education.
