Muhammad Safwan Harun is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Fiqh Usul & Applied Sciences, Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya. He specialises in Usul al-Fiqh, Maqasid al-ShariĘżah, and Contemporary Islamic Jurisprudence. Internationally, he has served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia (2024), and a Research Fellow at Marmara University, Türkiye (2025). He also serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including Jurnal Fiqh (Scopus). His international engagements include research collaborations, student mobility programmes, plenary lectures, and specialised fatwa training at Dar al-Ifta’, Egypt. Nationally, he serves as a Reference Expert Panel for the Maqasid al-ShariĘżah Division at JAKIM, an Executive Committee Member of the Maqasid Institute Malaysia, and a Shariah Expert Panel for the Malaysian Examinations Council. He also leads a JAKIM-funded national research project on the development of the Malaysian Maqasid Shariah Governance Index. Within Universiti Malaya, he currently serves as Head of the Zakat and Waqf Division, UM Giving, under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, while also holding various academic leadership and administrative appointments. To date, he has participated in 30 research grants, published more than 140 scholarly and professional works, and completed over 100 expert evaluations as a book reviewer and postgraduate examiner. His work reflects a sustained commitment to advancing Shariah scholarship, research excellence, and academic leadership.
