Md Azalanshah Md Syed is an Associate Professor at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies (1st class) from University of Malaya; Master of Creative Arts (Screen Production) from Flinders University; and PhD in Communication Studies from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. In recent years, he has served as Coordinator for the Master of Media Studies Programme (2015–2016; 2024-2026), Head of Department (2017–2021), Editor-in-Chief of Jurnal Pengajian Media Malaysia (2020-2025), Deputy Dean of Value Creation and Enterprise (2022–2024), Deputy Dean of Development (2024–2025), Member of the Malaysia–Korea Research Centre (2021–2024), Coordinator for UMHealth Branding & Promotion (2025) and Coordinator for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (2025–2027). He teaches Media, Culture and Society as well as Screen Production with special interest in documentary filmmaking and pre-production research. His documentary project on Mak Yong (2015) and Sultan Abu Bakar of Johore (2006) was funded by FINAS and Ministry of Arts, Cultural and Heritage. His research interests cover the fields of Asian popular culture mainly on soap opera/serial television drama, gender issues and Malay studies. Currently, he involves in ongoing research project on lifestyle, vaping addiction and drug abuse among teenagers in Malaysia. His authored and co-authored articles has appeared in various high impacts academic journals. In 2021, his interdisciplinary research team won silver award and award of merit in Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE2021) with their mobile application, CHD self-care that was designed for Coronary Heart Disease patient’s prescribed rehabilitation. It is a medical humanities project funded by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS). Md Azalanshah was appointed as the coordinator of the Journalism on Campus programme (2011-2013) - industry collaboration between the New Straits Times, University of Malaya and Ministry of Higher Education; Syndicated Screening Panel for TV Program Acquisition, Radio Television Malaysia (RTM); Associate Member - The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum; and member of the Research Fund Evaluation Committee of the Ministry of Higher Education (2020-2021). His community involvement was highlighted through an industry+NGO collaboration between the Institut Onn Jaafar, Department of Media and Communication Studies and Astro Awani for the Merdeka63 Campaign #KitajagaMalaysia PSA video series in conjunction with Malaysia's 63rd Independence Day celebration. https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/kitajagamalaysia. He has vast experience in the financial industry after serving the Malaysian stock exchange for ten years in the areas of finance and management research from 1993 to 2003. Since 2009 he has been teaching as well as undertaking research in the areas of finance and management as well as Islamic finance.
show more »Associate Professor ChM. Dr. Noraini Ahmad is a certified chemist recognized under the Malaysian Chemist Act 1975. She currently serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. Her academic journey began with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry from Universiti Malaya in 2003, followed by a MSc in Colloid and Surface Chemistry in 2008, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2012 from the same institution. During her doctoral studies, Dr. Noraini completed a prestigious research attachment at the Instituto de Química Avanzada de Cataluña - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IQAC-CSIC), Barcelona, Spain (2010–2012), supported by the InForm Project under the EU-FP7 programme and Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education. In 2015, she was selected to represent Malaysia as a Nanobiotechnology Scientist at the Workshop of Scientists from Russia and ASEAN Countries on Nanobiotechnology in Vladivostok, Russia. Her academic career began at the Centre for Foundation Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia (CFS IIUM), where she served as a lecturer for over three years. She joined Universiti Malaya in 2008 and was appointed as a Lecturer in 2012, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013, and later to Associate Professor in 2021. Dr. Noraini currently holds several key administrative roles at Universiti Malaya, including: Director, Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) Coordinator, Formulation and Product Development Unit, Centre for Natural Products Research and Drug Discovery (CENAR) STEM Representative, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya STEM Centre She has also served in leadership and academic roles such as Deputy Director and Fellow of UMCares, Programme Coordinator for BSc (Chemistry), MQF Coordinator, and Head of Section (Physical Chemistry) from 2019 to 2024. Internationally, Dr. Noraini has been honored as a Visiting Professor at several universities and frequently invited as a keynote and plenary speaker at international conferences. Her areas of expertise include Physical Chemistry particularly colloid chemistry, surfactants, self-assembly, liquid crystals, chemical kinetics, and green chemistry as well as Nanomaterials Formulation and Drug Delivery Systems. Her research primarily focuses on the development of nanocarrier systems using lipids and surfactants for applications in pharmaceuticals, medical therapeutics, cosmeceuticals, and nutraceuticals. She has secured over MYR 12 million in research funding as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator, demonstrating her active involvement and commitment to scientific research. Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Noraini is deeply engaged in university service and national development through various academic committees, research evaluations, and community programmes. She has received numerous awards and recognitions at both national and international levels for her outstanding contributions to science and education.
