Professor Dr Thong Kwai Lin is full Professor at the University of Malaya (UM). She joined UM as a lecturer in 1990, promoted to Associate Professor in 1997 and Full Professor in 2003. She obtained her PhD in 1997 from UM. She was the Director of the Centre for Research Services, Institute of Research Management and Monitoring (IPPP), UM from 2011-2015. She teaches Public Health Microbiology, Diagnostic Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, Microbial Pathogenesis at the Institute of Biological Science, Faculty of Science. Her field of specialisation is molecular microbiology of foodborne and nosocomial bacterial pathogens. Her current research is in the application of whole genome sequencing to dissect the genomes of bacterial pathogens to better understand the mechanism of drug resistance, virulence and pathogenicity of bacteria and development of biosensors for rapid detection of bacterial pathogens. She has published over 300 papers in refereed national and international journals and proceedings and presented more than 200 papers in conferences/symposia. Her WOS H-Index is 34 and has supervised over 95 postgraduates. Prof Thong has won numerous Awards related to research and teaching activities. These include 20 Gold Medals, 12 Silver Medals, 7 Bronze Medals in various National and International Invention & Innovation Exposition since 2005. She also received the Excellent Scientist Award from the Ministry of Higher Education (2005), the Medical Association of Malaysia-Infectious Disease Fund Visiting Fellowship (2006) and the 2013 Woman Scientist Award from University of Malaya, the University’s Excellent Service Awards for the years 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2012 and the Top Research Scientist Malaysia from the Academy of Science, Malaysia in 2014 and the prestigious Malaysian Society for Microbiology Award 2015. She was the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Ambassador to Malaysia for 7 years (2007-2014). For her excellent work and service, Prof Thong was awarded the American Society for Microbiology Ambassador of the Year (2009) Award and Certificate of Outstanding Service to the International Board of the American Society for Microbiology in 2011.
show more »Associate Professor Dr. Lau May Nak serves as an Associate Professor and Consultant Orthodontist at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. She obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from the University of Malaya in 2008. After working as a dental officer in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia for 5 years, she pursued further studies at the University of Malaya, graduating with a Master of Orthodontics (With Distinction) and Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2017. Joining the University of Malaya as a lecturer in 2018, Dr. Lau is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting research, and treating orthodontic and obstructive sleep apnoea patients. She is among the pioneers who established a multidisciplinary team with various medical and dental specialists at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for the management of obstructive sleep apnoea. She also serves in the Combined Oro-Craniomaxillofacial Deformities Clinic and Combined Paediatric Saliva Control Clinic at UMMC. Dr. Lau's research interests span a wide range of topics including orthodontics, anchorage, retention and relapse, teaching and learning methodologies, mandibular advancement appliance therapy, obstructive sleep apnoea, orthodontic materials, 3D printing, and orthognathic surgery. She holds the honorary position of assistant secretary at the Malaysian Association of Orthodontists, and she is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Glasgow. Additionally, Dr. Lau is a life member of the International Association of Student Clinicians – American Dental Association (SCADA).
show more »Dr. Siti Soraya Abdul Rahman is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. She was appointed as a program leader for ALEPS (Adaptive Learning Environment for Problem Solving) in Pyhsics under the Innovative Technology Research Cluster. Previously, she was the Head of Augmented Human Learning Program, under the Humanities Research Cluster, University of Malaya. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator for a UM Living Labs @ UMSDC entitled "Smart Waste Management System: An IoT-Based Approach For Automated Waste Classification And Bin Monitoring". She also secured an International Research Grant entitled "Personalised Learning Technologies based on Learning Style using Fuzzy Logic" in programming with University of Bengkulu, Indonesia. She is also a University of Malaya Library Committee representing the faculty. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology from the University of Glamorgan, UK in 1998 and received a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Malaya in 2003. She was conferred with a PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of Sussex, UK in 2012. Her current research interests and expertise are in the area of Machine Learning (for structured data) and Deep Learning; Advanced Graph Neural Networks; Social Network Analysis; Generative AI and Explainable AI; Responsible AI; Prompt Engineering; Large Language Models; Natural Language Interface to Databases (NLIDBs); Advanced Topic Modeling; Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) in human activity recognition and waste monitoring; Knowledge Representation and Reasoning; Data Science (predictive analytics, data analytics, text analytics, and sentiment analysis); Cognitive Science (cognition and programming; physics problem solving); Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED); E-learning and Expert System.
