Ts Dr. Vimala Balakrishnan is a Professor affiliated with the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaya since 2010. She earned her PhD in Ergonomics from Multimedia University, complementing her academic journey that commenced with Master's and Bachelor's degrees obtained from the University of Science Malaysia. Dr. Balakrishnan's primary research focus lies in the domains of machine learning and deep learning, particularly in data analytics, with a specialized emphasis on social media applications. Her research interests span across diverse sectors, including healthcare and critical social issues like cyberbullying, suicide and misinformation propagation. She has published more than 100 articles in top indexed journals, 60 conference proceedings and eight book chapters, has three patents and sixteen copyrights. She is a Fulbright Research Scholar (2018) and a recipient of the Leadership in Innovation Fellowship (by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK) award. Others include Malaysia Scopus Excellence Research Award 2024 -Societal Impact, Excellent Service Award 2017 & 2024, Cardiff Incoming Visiting Fellowship Scheme 2017, Best Elsevier Reviewer Award 2018 (Computer in Human Behavior), and awards won both at local and international competitions (three diamonds, 22 golds, 8 silvers and 4 bronze). Dr Balakrishnan is an advocate for women in science, and acts as the founder of HeRDS: Heels and Rouge in Data Science and co-founder of the Community of Practice in Research (Hello@UM). She was also listed as one of the top 2% world scientists by the Stanford University in five consecutive years (2020 - 2024), both in the single year and career categories. Dr Balakrishnan was recently recognized as one of the Successful People in Malaysia in the June 2022 issue as part of the British Media Publishing House publication. She teaches both the undergraduate and post-graduate students at the faculty. She has supervised ten PhD students, three Master by Research and 22 Master by Mixed-mode students to completion. Dr. Balakrishnan is currently supervising five PhD students, and two Master by Research students. She also supervises Master of Data Science students, and has served as the Program Coordinator for four consecutive years (2017 - 2021). Dr. Balakrishnan serves as the Editor-in-Chief to the Malaysian Journal of Computer Science. She serves as an active reviewer for several International journals, and as an external examiner for PhD thesis (e.g. International University of Malaya-Wales, Kolej Damansara Penang, Maynooth University Ireland, Modi Institute India, etc.). Dr. Balakrishnan also acts as the Program Assessor for HELP University (Master in Data Science and Bachelor in IT Data Analytics), Monash University (Bachelor in Applied Data Science), Multimedia University (Bachelor in Digital Analytics Management) and International Medical University Malaysia (Bachelor in Digital Health). She has given guest lectures at Yale University (2022), University of Georgia (2018), and Georgia Technology of Institute (2018), USA, Cardiff University (2017), UK, Soongsil University (2016), Korea, and as a Keynote Speaker at the Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering 2019 Conference (India). She has appeared in the local media (BFM Radio Malaysia, TV3), local newspapers and magazine (The Star, Berita Harian, Her World), podcasts, YouTube and served as an expert advisor in a round table session (Communications and Multimedia Content Forum Malaysia) on cyberbullying detection mechanisms. Currently, she is actively working on innovative solution-based projects related to digital health platforms including developing an integrated VOT enabled app for Tuberculosis management, MyTBCompanion through her Projek Celik TB (funded by the Research and Innovation for Development in ASEAN UK & Fulbright Alumni Engagement Fund 2024) and a chatbot for HIV minority communities with her international collaborators from Yale University (funded by Gilead Inc. amounting to 499,000 USD). show more »Dr. Lim is a Consultant Neurologist and Professor at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, where he runs a very busy government clinic and private practice seeing many patients (around 70 every week) with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other Movement Disorders, including complicated cases requiring advanced treatments such as deep brain stimulation. Dr. Lim earned his medical and research doctorate degrees from the University of Melbourne and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians after completing advanced training in adult Internal Medicine and Neurology in Melbourne. Dr. Lim trained in general neurology and subspecialized in Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders, at world-renowned centres in Melbourne and Toronto (the latter supported by the Edmond J. Safra Fellowship, under Prof. Anthony Lang). He has published widely in the field of Movement Disorders (Parkinson's as well as a variety of rarer movement disorders), with approx. 150 peer-reviewed journal papers and book chapters, including first-author publications in Lancet Neurology, Archives of Neurology/JAMA Neurology, Movement Disorders, etc. and co-authorship in journals such as Nature Genetics, Nature Reviews Neurology, Annals of Neurology, and Brain (approx. 10K citations, h-index 44). He is on several Editorial Boards including Parkinsonism & Related Disorders and Neurotorium, and is an Associate Editor for Nature Partner Journal (npj) Parkinson's Disease and Neurology Asia (for several years previously also for Science Advances), and Guest Editor for the Journal of Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Lim is the current Chair of the Asian-Oceanian section of the International Parkinson & Movement Disorder Society (MDS) (which has approx. 3.5K members, from the Clinical and Basic science communities), and serves on several MDS Committees/Task Forces (for Evidence-Based Medicine; Progressive Supranuclear Palsy; Movement Disorders in Asia; Palliative Care; etc.). He is a Steering Committee member, and Co-Lead of the Under-Represented Populations Working Group, of the Global Parkinson's Genetics Program (GP2). He is a holder and/or Reviewer of grants for PD-related funding organisations such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF), and the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and Cure Parkinspn's Trust (CPT). With a strong commitment to teaching/training, Dr. Lim has organized numerous teaching courses on Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders, and delivered and/or participated in hundreds of international-level lectures and expert panels throughout Asia-Oceania, North America, and Europe. These have often been under the auspices of the MDS, as MDS Visiting Professor, MDS Ambassador, or MDS Virtual Professor. As a versatile speaker with broad-ranging expertise, he has been invited to give numerous Plenary Lectures, including at the flagship MDS Annual Congress (Toronto 2011, Dublin 2012, Nice 2019, Philadelphia/Virtual 2020, Copenhagen 2023, Honolulu 2025) and at the World Parkinson's Congress (Kyoto 2019). In 2025, together with Profs. Nobutaka Hattori and Pramod Pal, he Chaired a highly successful 9th Asian & Oceanian Parkinson's & Movement Disorders Congress (AOPMC) in Tokyo. He has provided movement disorder fellowship/observership training to neurologists from multiple underserved countries, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, and Nigeria, often under the auspices of the MDS (Visiting Trainee Grants or Centre-to-Centre Programs). Dr. Lim is a Medical Advisor to the Malaysian Parkinson’s Disease Association, and a founding member (and Immediate-Past Chair) of the Malaysian Movement Disorder Council. He was elected as a Fellow of the Malaysian Academy of Sciences in 2017. In recognition of his leadership in the Movement Disorders field, he was invited to be an Expert Panelist/Consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 to address global policy, implementation and research related to PD. Dr. Lim's research interests are multi-dimensional, with a focus on the following areas: (i) PD (particularly genetics and genotype-phenotype correlations; evidence-based medicine/clinical trials; non-motor features including gastrointestinal aspects; comorbidities; patient-centred care; and rating scales/disease staging); (ii) Parkinson-plus syndromes and other miscellaneous/"orphan" movement disorders, including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
show more »Professor Dr. Haris Abd Wahab is a faculty member at the Department of Social Administration and Justice, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. He currently serves as the Deputy Dean (Development) and previously held the position of Deputy Dean (Student Affairs) within the same faculty. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Haris specializes in Community Development and has been instrumental in advancing teaching, learning, and research in the fields of community development and social work. He lectures on various subjects including social problems, social work, community development, social marketing, research methodology, and social theories. His research interests encompass community well-being, social care programs for at-risk children in Malaysia, children’s well-being, and social development among vulnerable groups. Before joining academia, Dr. Haris served as a Medical Social Worker at the Ministry of Health Malaysia from 1996 to 2000, where he gained valuable field experience in social work practice.
