Biography | |
Dr Juliana Othman is a Professor in Language Education and Chair of the Centre for Research in Language Education (CRiLE) at the Faculty of Education, University of Malaya. She is an applied linguist and teacher educator. She has held administrative posts as Head of the Dept of Language & Literacy Education (2015-2018) and Deputy Director of the Centre for the Initiation of Talent and Industrial Training (2013). Professor Juliana has been involved in language education at various levels for the past 25 years. In recognition of her academic merit and leadership potential, Professor Juliana was awarded the highly competitive Fulbright Scholar Fellowship in 2008 which she spent at the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania. She was also awarded a visiting scholarship at the University of Washington, in 2008, St Mark & St John College, the University of Plymouth in 2012, and Asian University Alliance Scholar in 2019. She served as a consultant for a British Council research project in 2021. She has also received numerous UM Excellent Service Awards (APC 2017 and 2010, SPC for 2008, 2007,2005, 2004, and 2003). She has served on the Malaysian Qualification Agency panel of evaluators, as an External Examiner for the BEd TESL Programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Wawasan Open University, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Institute Pendidikan Guru Malaysia; External Examiner for Masters of Research program at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia and Panel Auditor for a PhD in TESL program at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She has also served as a consultant to a BED TEYL programme development for Institute Pendidikan Guru Ilmu Khas and advisor to Sunway University. Professor Juliana has headed several internal and external research including those from the Asian University Alliance, the British Council, the Ministry of Education, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia. Her research focuses on second language education, teacher education and professional development, and bilingual education. Professor Juliana has authored and co-authored several books, articles and research reports on issues in teacher professional development, research methodology in language studies, second language pedagogy, writing and content-based instruction.
