Professor Ts. Dr. Rafidah Md Noor served as the Director of the Quality Management and Enhancement Center (QMEC) at Universiti Malaya from June 2022 to April 2025. Previously, she was the Head of the Centre of Research (COR) for Mobile Cloud Computing (C4MCCR) from 2016 to 2023. Her prior roles include Deputy Dean (Science) at the Institute for Advanced Studies from December 2019 to November 2021, Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology from August 2014 to July 2016, and Head of the Department of Computer System and Technology at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaya, from February 2011 to July 2014. Rafidah received her BIT from Universiti Utara Malaysia in 1998, and MSc in Computer Science from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2000, and PhD in Computer Science from Lancaster University, United Kingdom in 2010. Throughout her career, she has mentored 1 Postdoctoral Fellow, guided more than 15 PhD students, supervised 5 Master of Computer Science (by Research) candidates, and over 30 Master of Computer Science (Mixed Mode) students, as well as taught various courses. Rafidah’s research is related to a field of transportation system in computer science research domain. For many computer scientists, her research interests related to Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), improving the road traffic system and safety for urban environments. Her research interests include vehicular networks, mobile and wireless networks, Internet-of-Things, Cloud and Fog computing, Quality of Service (QoS), and Energy Management. She is actively involve in research grant's evaluation at University and Ministry Level. Rafidah has successfully secured over 2.5 million Ringgit Malaysia in research grants from both internal and external sources, with 1.3 million Ringgit Malaysia attributed to her role as the Principal Investigator. She is also a co-researcher grants with other local universities such as Sunway University, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, UCSI, and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). To contribute her research ideas into a community, she has designed and patent a novel framework, System and Method for Relieving Traffic Congestion (PT/5503/UM/14) (granted 23 June 2020 until 12 November 2034) for emergency rescue operations. She has filed and granted several copyrights from her research works since 2012 to current. Rafidah’s efforts are driven by the courage to implement the framework that challenges the existing protocol/standard. She is actively publishing journals in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE - with Cumulative Impact Factor (CIF) more than 200) and Scopus. She has published more than 100 SCIE indexed journals (50% published in Tier 1), H-index (26 in Publons and 32 in Scopus), and 3170 Scopus Citation. She involves in International journal and textbook reviewers, and national research grant assessors (Ministry of Higher Education, Private Universities and International Institutions). Rafidah is an Associate Editor in Connected Mobility and Automation (Specialty Section), Frontiers in Future Transportation Journal, Guest Editor for a Special Issue, SCIE indexed journal reviewers, served as advisory and technical committee for International conferences, Distinguished lecture for IEEE VTS Summer School (Malaysia), and Keynote speakers for International conferences. Rafidah won 14 awards (GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE Medals) from Research Innovation, Exhibition and Competition at National and International Level for her works on Urban Transportation and Computing Solutions (since 2012 until present). She served as external examiners for PhD thesis for public and private universities locally and internationally. She is actively involve in curriculum development and monitoring, therefore her skills is recognised and has been appointed as the Panel Assessor/External Examiner for Existing Academic Programme and Programme Accreditation (Bachelor, Master and PhD Degrees) at Sunway University, Taylor's University, Monash University, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). show more »Lucy Lum Chai See joined the University of Malaya, Department of Paediatrics in 1990. Assigned to the paediatric acute care ward, she recognised the need of acutely ill children and set to look after them even though resources were meagre, the resistance to expansion stiff and the doctors and nurses lacking in knowledge and skills. Pioneers of Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) were invited to Malaysia to begin PALS training. Over the next four years, Lucy and colleagues contributed to twenty-five consecutive training courses for >800 doctors and nurses in 12 of 13 states. Her enthusiasm and perseverance saw her refining the management of severe dengue in children and other critical conditions. She underwent clinical-fellowship training in paediatric intensive care in The Hospital for Sick Children, in 1996. The Toronto and the North American experience shaped Lucy’s physiological approach to mechanical ventilation of healthy and sick lungs. She later became the first Malaysian to complete the Paediatric examination for the European Diploma in Intensive Care. Back in Malaysia, the P1 Acute Care Ward was hit by a shortage of funding and support. Despite of the limited resources, the unit played a key role in defining the pathophysiology of EV71 outbreak which caused many deaths in 1997. In 2001 the Hospital allowed a charity fund to be established. Soon after The Star highlighted the PICU work, generous support poured in through individual, public and corporate donations. Then UMMC eventually acknowledged the work and formed the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. For the first time the PICU received a stronger allocation of nurses and budget needed to ensure the smooth delivery of intensive care for children. Humanitarian medicine should not be a casualty of technology. Lucy is very much a hands-on bedside doctor. Her clinical rounds are characterised by both an incisive analysis of history, physical examinations and investigations as well as standing back to view the “Google map”. Doctors and nurses are trained not just to treat the disease, but to treat the patient as a human being connected to families and societies. Her clinical expertise was sought after by WHO, and regional offices in the Western-Pacific Region where she has been to China, Laos, the Solomon Islands and Africa. She was invited by WHO/TDR to be the lead author of the handbook on clinical case management of dengue and by WPRO to design a training curriculum of dengue management. She was credited for bringing calm to a chaotic situation in the Solomon Islands, a poor nation of islands in the middle of the Pacific. Re-training doctors in basic clinical techniques which identify the high risk patients was her legacy. She has managed to unify the various clinical departments in UMMC to work together so that dengue patients do not fall between the cracks. She collaborated with the various hospitals in Ministry of Health and WHO, Geneva, Oxford University, Brandeis University, and other universities in Singapore, SEAsia, Latin America and European Union. In the field of paediatric intensive care, she collaborates with colleagues in North America and around the world in pediatric sepsis, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Compassion has to be the driving force behind the otherwise just another slogan, “First, do no harm”. Through her inspirational leadership, the PICU which used to record high rates of nosocomial infections has been transformed into one with high rates of hand hygiene and low rates of infection. Yet, the work is not finished; her KPI (key performance index) for her staff is zero blood stream infection. Indeed this is possible.
show more »Dr. Azman Ma’amor is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, whose work bridges advanced materials chemistry, catalysis, and sustainable product development. His research focuses on transforming natural and industrial waste into high-value functional materials, particularly for environmental, biomedical, and cosmetic applications. Dr. Azman has established an active research portfolio in nanomaterials, heterogeneous catalysis, and photocatalytic materials, with particular emphasis on hydroxyapatite and calcium-based biomaterials derived from marine waste such as clamshells and cuttlefish bone. His work contributes to circular economy strategies by converting underutilized biowaste into sustainable materials for water treatment, biomaterials, and emerging cosmetic technologies. In recent years, he has expanded his research toward cosmetic science and advanced skincare formulations, exploring the use of naturally derived calcium compounds and functional nanomaterials for innovative skincare products. He has published 23 ISI-indexed journal articles (7 Q1, 13 Q2, 3 Q3) with an H-index of 12 and more than 370 citations, reflecting significant contributions to catalysis, nanomaterials, and environmental chemistry. Dr. Azman has also secured over RM460,000 in competitive research funding as Principal Investigator, while contributing to collaborative projects totaling over RM1.8 million in funding. His research has resulted in several innovation awards, including gold medals at international innovation competitions and the Universiti Malaya Excellent Service Award. Beyond research, Dr. Azman actively mentors postgraduate students and contributes to academic leadership at Universiti Malaya. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research, he continues to advance sustainable chemistry and functional material development for environmental and cosmetic applications, aiming to translate laboratory discoveries into practical technologies and high-value products.
