ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. CHOO YEUN MUN

Dr. Choo currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya, Malaysia. She received both her Ph.D. in Chemistry (2004) and her B.Sc. (Hons. Class 1) in Chemistry (1997) from the University of Malaya. Upon completion of her doctoral studies, she continued her research journey with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Mississippi, USA. Further enhancing her international research experience, she undertook visiting scholar appointments at the National Tsinghua University (Taiwan), the IBM Almaden Research Center (USA), and the Institute for Molecular Science (Japan). Dr Choo's research centres on the discovery of bioactive compounds from Malaysia’s ethnomedicinal flora, integrating traditional knowledge with modern drug discovery tools. She investigates underexplored native species using phytochemical profiling, bioactivity assays, and advanced spectroscopy, supported by computational approaches such as molecular docking, pharmacophore modelling, and network pharmacology to guide target identification and lead prioritisation. This integrative strategy, including DFT calculations for structural insights, proved especially effective during the COVID-19 pandemic in identifying potential SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors. Her work extends to diverse chemical scaffolds with applications in infectious disease, oncology, and neuroinflammation. Dr Choo has published over 90 scientific papers and book chapters, and holds an H-index of 24 (Web of Science) and 25 (Scopus). In addition to her research pursuits, Dr. Choo is dedicated to education and student mentorship. At the University of Malaya, she teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Natural Product Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Organic Synthesis. She is deeply committed to fostering critical thinking and practical skills among her students, encouraging them to pursue excellence in both academic and research endeavours.
