Dr. Tan Ai Huey is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya (UM) and Consultant Neurologist and Physician at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. As a clinician-scientist, she dedicates her career to excellence in patient care, and medical research and education, particularly in the neurological subspecialty area of Parkinson's disease (PD) and Movement Disorders. After completing her specialty training in Internal Medicine and subspecialty training in Neurology in 2015, Dr. Tan obtained a PhD degree (with thesis distinction), in which she explored the role of the gut microbiome and novel therapeutic approaches, such as probiotics, in PD. Leading an inter-disciplinary research team at UM, her research has since expanded to genetic and biomarker discoveries in PD and rare movement disorders (e.g., dystonia and ataxia), with the aim to uncover factors that are unique and relevant to the Asian population. Other key research areas include uncovering the impact of geriatric conditions, comorbidities, and non-motor features, as well as understanding patient/caregiver perspectives, in PD. Through collaborations with local and international partners, Dr. Tan and her team work tirelessly to advance personalized, holistic, and patient-centered care in PD and related disorders. Dr. Tan has published extensively in leading medical journals, including first-author publications in Nature Reviews Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Neurology, and Movement Disorders, and co-authorship publications in Lancet Neurology, Nature Genetics, and JAMA Neurology. Her research has received support from renowned funding organizations including the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Aligning Science Across Parkinson's (ASAP) via the Global Parkinson’s Genetic Program (GP2), and the Toray Science Foundation. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, a reputable journal in the field. Dr. Tan was elected as the President of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences (MSN) from 2018 to 2022, the professional body that represents Malaysian neurologists and neuroscientists. She currently serves as Honorary Secretary of the MSN Movement Disorder Council, within which she co-authored the National Consensus Treatment Guidelines for PD. She has played key roles in developing the national neurology subspecialty training curriculum. Internationally, she was Treasurer of the ASEAN Neurological Association and has been appointed to Chair several committees of the International Parkinson & Movement Disorder Society (MDS, the peak world body representing clinicians and scientists in the PD/Movement Disorder field), including the MDS Communications Oversight Committee and the MDS Web-based Learning Subcommittee. She is also a Member of the MDS Asian-Oceanian Section Executive Committee and the MDS Evidence-Based Medicine Steering Committee. Grateful for the mentors in her career, she is highly passionate about teaching and believes in developing the next-generation talent in medicine and science, and was twice voted as the Best Clinical Lecturer Award at the UM Faculty of Medicine. Frequently invited as an expert faculty member at various national and international conferences and workshops, Dr. Tan is dedicated to enhancing education and training in PD and movement disorders, especially in underserved regions around the globe, where these efforts can have the most significant impact.
show more »Dr Shiaw-Hooi Ho is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Department of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. He is also a Senior Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist and Therapeutic Endoscopist in both the UM Medical Centre (UMMC) and UM Specialist Centre (UMSC). Dr Ho received his basic medical degree in 2001 and went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Gastroenterology from Universiti Malaya in 2009 and 2012 respectively. He underwent further advanced endoscopy training in many international endoscopy centres of excellence most notably, the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. He is active in promoting the use of image-enhanced endoscopy and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) both in the detection and management of early gastrointestinal (GI) neoplasia and cancer. In his routine endoscopy work, he performs numerous other diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies such as peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER), biliopancreatic endoscopy, small bowel enteroscopy, etc. His other areas of expertise include the management of various GI disorders and chronic liver diseases. Dr Ho is an associate editor of the BioMed Central Gastroenterology and an international advisor of the Advances in Digestive Medicine, both are peer-reviewed journals. He is a councillor member of the Asia Pacific Society of Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE) and a Fellow of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES). He is also a faculty member of both the Asia Pacific Endoscopy Research Forum (AERF) and the Asian Novel Bio-Imaging & Intervention Group (ANBIIG). Apart from endoscopy, he is the co-chairman and board member of the Medical Working Group (MWG) of the Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) which is active in organizing various international teleconferences among healthcare practitioners. His past contributions and positions are as below: i) Scientific Committee of ENDO2024, 4th World Congress of GI Endoscopy; ii) Scientific Co-Chair of Endoscopy for Asian Pacific Digestive Week (APDW) 2021 iii) Director of the Combined Endoscopy Unit, UMMC (2020 to 2024) iv) Course Director for UM annual endoscopy workshop (2020-2024), done in collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (MSGH)
show more »My academic career began on December 05, 2001 as a tutor at the Department of Islamic History and Civilization, APIUM. A year later I had completed my Usuluddin Master's Degree in Islamic History with a dissertation entitled "Dato' Haji Ismail Yusof: His Contribution to the Development of Islam in Kelantan". After completing my master's degree, I was assigned as a lecturer in the Department of Islamic History and Civilization on January 24, 2003 until now. In 2012, I have successfully graduated with a PhD degree from the same deparment after submitting a research thesis entitled "Majalah Pengasuh After Independence: A Study of Themes and Approaches". Throughout my career as a lecturer at Department of Islamic History and Civilization, I have actively written various articles in the fields of Islamic letters, the development of jawi writing, sirah nabawiah, Method of Islamic Biography Writing and Islamic civilization in addition to presenting papers at national or international seminars. Among the areas of research that have been carried out are on Jawi writing, Jawi-Islamic manuscripts, and Islamic letters, scholarly figures of the Malay Peninsula and the relationship between Malaysian and Indonesian Islamic institutions of higher education. I have written more than 60 papers in seminar proceedings, more than 125 articles that have been published in national and international journals, in addition to various activities that are academic, community and so on. Now I have been entrusted to lead the Department of History and Islamic Civilization as the Head of Department starting from Julai 2012 until April 30, 2020. In addition, I was also appointed as Ahli Lembaga Pengarah Universiti Islam Malaysia since 2019 and also now as Ahli Senat UIM. In 2022, I was appointed as Prof Madya in the same department and have now published more or less 250 publications in various academic mediums.
