Dr. Lim Siew Huah is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Malaya (UM), where she specializes in Natural Products Chemistry and Bioorganic Chemistry. She earned her Ph.D. (2013), M.Sc. (2007), and B.Sc. (Hons.) (2004) from UM, and her research focuses on isolating and studying bioactive compounds from Malaysian plants, particularly alkaloids, for potential applications in health sciences and biotechnology. Dr. Lim has extensive experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students and has been actively involved in curriculum development. She teaches courses in organic chemistry and molecular spectroscopy, incorporating contemporary research findings into her teaching. She previously served as the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for the B.Sc. Chemistry program, where she oversaw academic planning and program improvements. In addition to lecturing, she supervises final-year undergraduate research projects (FYP) and mentors MSc and PhD students in organic and natural products chemistry, guiding them in phytochemical investigations and structural elucidation of bioactive compounds. Her research focuses on natural products chemistry, particularly the isolation, structural elucidation, and spectroscopic characterization of plant-derived secondary metabolites. She specializes in the study of alkaloids, employing advanced spectroscopic techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to determine the structures of complex natural compounds. Her work extends to the chemical modification of natural products to understand their structure-activity relationships and enhance their potential applications. Her research explores the diverse flora of Malaysia to uncover bioactive natural compounds with potential therapeutic relevance. Investigations include the structural modification of natural products to explore their chemical properties and interactions, particularly in cancer-related studies, skin brightening effects, and other health-related applications. show more »Yasmin completed her BSc at University of Surrey and MSc at University of Malaya then received a Chevening scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Plant Virology at the John Innes Institute U.K. She joined UM as a lecturer in the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology and was appointed a full Professor in 2005, an elected member of UM senate since 2017 and the senate representative to the board of UM from 2019 to 2021. She retired offcially from UM in May 2021 and currently continues to serve UM as an honarary Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies UM. She is also an adjunct professor at IUMW and an honarary fellow of the Tun Ghazali Shafie Institue for Strategic leadership at UCYP. She is fellow and currently on the council of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia She contiinues to be part of a dynamic research group and still publishes actively, focusing on utilising modern biotechnology strategies to tackle fundamental problems in agriculture as well on issues related to BioPolicies, Bioethics and Biosafety. Recently she was involved in ASMs Science Outlook 2020 review and the National Biotechnology Policy II. She has filed more than 10 patents and graduated more than 20 PhD and 25 MSc students. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and listed as in the Top Research Scientist Malaysia database. She was a founding trustee of the National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia, a founding member of the Asian Network for Biosafety Education and was a two term expert member on the National Biosafety Board. Yasmin was the first head of the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture and chair of the University’s Biotechnology and Bioproduct Cluster (UMBIO). She was also chief editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. in 2009 she left UM for a 3 year secondment to the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation Malaysia as Undersecretary of the National Biotechnology Division . During her tenure Malaysia launched the Bioeconomy Initiative Malaysia designed to spur growth of the biotechnology industry. Whilst there, she spearheaded the committee which led to the formation of the National Bioethics Council. She has sat on the Board of Directors of MARDI, the Board of Governors of ICGEB, Trieste and was the National Point of Contact (NPC) for UNESCO’s Microbial Biotechnology Network and SEA-EU-NET (Biotech). Prior to retirement she was Associate vice chancellor (Industry & Community) & prior to this the Director of the University of Malaya Centre for Innovation & Commercilisation. In these roles she focused on building the university's entreprenureal ecosystem andd fostering engagement and collaboration with industry and the community. She is also founding vice president of the Innovation and Technology Managers Association Malaysia. She has sat on the Board of MaGIC (mymagic.my) and more recently on the boards of UMInnovations SB, UMPlantations SB & UMCapital Berhad. She is now chair of the Boards of Mranti corporation and Xeraya Capital. show more »Norlidah Alias is a Professor in the Curriculum and Instructional Technology Department, Faculty of Education, University of Malaya. Her area of expertise is Curriculum Development and TVET ( Curriculum). She was a former Deputy Dean (Higher Degrees) at the Faculty (28/3/2019-27/3/2021). Prior joining University of Malaya, she has served as an Assistant Director at Teacher Training Institution, Ministry of Education. She received her Bachelor Degree (Electrical Engineering) from Monash University, Australia, and her Master and PhD degrees from University of Malaya. Her Scopus h-indexed is 13 with 614 citations. She has headed several consultations and research projects, particularly in the area of TVET curriculum acceptance and pedagogy, funded by various international and local agencies. Currently she is the Principal Investigator for several industry research grants at national level and she is a PI for an International Research grant. She has authored and co-authored 12 books, 12 academic articles in ISI-ranked publications and many other Scopus-ranked publications. Her works are published in top-tier International journals including Journal of Educational Tehnology and Society (ETS), Eurasian Journal Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (EJMSTE), Educational Technology Research & Development (ETR&D), Frontiers in Public Health and Interactive Learning Environments. She has also served as an Advisory Committee Member TOJET and TOJSAT, Editorial Board Member for ETS and TOJET, Founding Editor of Malaysian Online Journal of Educational Technology (MOJET) (2013-2016) and Founding Editor for Journal Kurikulum dan Pengajaran Asia Pasifik (JuKu) (2013-2016). She is the Vice President of the Persatuan Kurikulum Malaysia (PerKum). She has received recognition for her teaching and research including awards such as University of Malaya's Excellent Service Award 2014 & 2020, University of Malaya Excellent Service Certificate 2013, 2019 and was Finalist for Malaysian Minister of Education Special Award (Transformative Teaching Category, 2019). She has also won the Gold Medal Award 2010 at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) held in Malaysia. She has presented keynotes in International Conferences and was invited speaker in TV program. She has supervised 36 PhD students (19 graduated, 17 on-going) and 23 master's students (24 graduated and 3 on-going). She has supervised an international post doctoral researcher and co-supervised PhD students at other international institutions. She has been appointed as a National TVET Technical Committee Member by the MInister of Education. She serves as an International Assessor for the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council. Currently, she has been appointed as Lead Consultant under UPUM Sdn. Bhd, for two government TVET projects under CIAST and Department of Skills Development, Ministry of Human Resources.
