Tan Chin Joo is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UM. He obtained both his Bachelor of Engineering degree and Master of Engineering Science degree from UM in year 1999 and 2003, respectively. He was a tutor in UM 1999 and later be promoted to a lecturer in 2003. In 2005, he was offered a scholarship by JICA for his doctoral study in Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan. After completing his study in 2008, he joined TOPY Industries Limited, Japan. After 3 years of working in TOPY (2 years in R&D Dept. and 1 year in Production Dept.), he returned to Malaysia and joined Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). He joined UM in December, 2011. His research interests include stamping of lightweight parts, finite element analysis of metal forming processes, laser hardening, green forming processes, tube forming.
show more »Dr. Lee-Ling Lim is Professor of Medicine, UM and Head of the Diabetes Care Unit, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. As a clinician-scientist, her major areas of interest include cardiometabolic medicine and intergenerational diabetes with translational and implementation science components. Dr. Lim sits on the Working Groups of The Lancet Commission on Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association/European Association for the Study of Diabetes (ADA/EASD) Precision Medicine in Diabetes Initiative, who provide authoritative resources in tackling the global diabetes epidemic. She recognizes that every person with diabetes and non-communicable disease (NCD) is unique and warrants personalized care. To revolutionize health care, Dr. Lim aims to advance the implementation of Precision Medicine in Diabetes and NCD, taking into account differences in clinical presentation, genes, and lifestyles in Malaysian populations. These have led to several collaborations with the USA, UK, and other Asian countries. She has published in numerous high-impact journals including The Lancet, Nature, Diabetes Care, and Science Bulletin. Dr. Lim has received several awards including the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University for 3 consecutive years (2022-2024), the EFSD Albert Renold Fellowship, the USA Endocrine Society Outstanding Abstract Award, and a scholarship funded by the USA NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences for training in statistical genetics at the University of Washington, USA. She is an Editorial Board Member of several Tier 1 Web of Science-indexed journals (BMC Medicine, Diabetes/Metabolism Research & Reviews, and Diabetes & Metabolism). Dr. Lim is an article reviewer for 29 leading academic journals including the European Heart Journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, Diabetes Care, PLoS Medicine, and European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Throughout her career, Professor Liyana has successfully supervised numerous PhD students to completion, reflecting her dedication to mentoring and nurturing future scholars. She is a prolific researcher with a Scopus H-index of 35 and a Web of Science H-index of 32, and she has published extensively in high-impact journals and international conference proceedings. Her research interests include personalization, e-learning, recommender systems, data analytics, data science, AI applications, and educational technology. An accomplished innovator, Professor Liyana has received over 30 prestigious awards at both national and international levels, including multiple best paper accolades. She leads impactful projects as the Principal Investigator, notably on digital skills frameworks and mental health applications for senior citizens, alongside various AI-driven initiatives in Healthcare and Education. Her consultancy work for Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education includes evaluating digital learning readiness across higher education institutions. A senior member of the IEEE Computer Society, Professor Liyana also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Universitas Semarang, Indonesia, where she continues to advance the fields of computer science and AI applications.
