Khoo Ying Hooi, PhD, is an Associate Professor of International Relations and Human Rights at Universiti Malaya (UM). Her research centres on human rights and democracy in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on civil society, Southeast Asian politics, and the domestic politics of Malaysia and Timor-Leste. She also works extensively on human rights education, academic freedom, and the geopolitics of the region, examining how global and regional power dynamics shape rights discourses, civic spaces, and institutional contestations. She is the author of “The Bersih Movement and Democratisation in Malaysia” (SIRD/ ISEAS/ Lexington Books, 2020) and “Seeds of Dissent (Gerakbudaya, 2015). Furthermore, Ying Hooi has also co-edited several volumes, such as “Social and Political Deglobalisation: Covid-19, Conflict and Uncertainties in Malaysia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), “Marginalisation and Human Rights in Southeast Asia” (Routledge, 2022) and “Rethinking Human Rights and Peace in the Post-Independence Timor-Leste through Local Perspectives” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022). Her co-author paper (with C. Leong, I. Faik, F. Tan and B. Tan, 2020), “Digital organising of a global social movement: from connective to collective action," won the 2021 Best Paper Award at the Information and Organization and was Runner-Up in the 2021 Special Interest Group-Grounded Theory Methodology (SIG-GTM). Ying Hooi is the Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Journal of International Relations (MJIR) and sits on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, the Journal of Southeast Asian Human Rights (JSEAHR), and the Indonesian Law Review (ILREV). Ying Hooi has been appointed to the International Advisory Council by the Timor-Leste government for Centro Nacional Chega! (CNC), a public institute tasked to institutionalise memory and promote human rights. She is also a founding member of the Southeast Asian Coalition for Academic Freedom (SEA-CAF). She received several fellowships, including the Mellon/ SAR Academic Freedom Fellowship by Scholars at Risk (SAR), the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) Curriculum Fellowship, and visiting fellowships at Kyushu University, Mahidol University, Humboldt University of Berlin and Beijing Foreign Studies University. She has served as a judge in several local and international human rights awards, including the Amnesty International Philippines Ignite Awards and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) Human Rights Awards. Between 2013 and 2016, Ying Hooi was involved in the diplomatic training course for the Institute of Diplomatic Studies (IDS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in Timor-Leste. Additionally, she has contributed to consultancies for organisations like the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), the Democracy Academy of Malaysia, and Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research and Education in Southeast Asia (SHAPE-SEA). In addition to her academic roles, Ying Hooi has extensive experience in the field of human rights and democracy in Southeast Asia. These roles include serving as a Scientific Member in the Observatory of Political Alternatives in Southeast Asia (ALTERSEA), Vice-Chair in the Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (PROHAM), and Board Member in the Innovation of Change - East Asia Governance Circle (EAGC). Before entering academia, Ying Hooi garnered experience in corporate sectors and served as the Head of International Issues and Cooperation at the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). Her involvements include the ASEAN human rights body (now AICHR) in the ASEAN Charter, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Malaysia in Geneva and the SUHAKAM Amendment Bill 2009.
show more »Dr. Rozita Yusoff is currently the Deputy Director, University of Malaya Academic Strategic Planning Centre (ASP Centre) and Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Malaya. She obtained her first degree in Chemical Engineering from Technical University of Nova Scotia, Canada (1992). Both her Master degree (1996) and PhD Degree (2005) were obtained from UMIST, United Kingdom. She started working in University Malaya as a tutor in 1992, and then was appointed to lecturer in 1996 after completing her Master degree. She is an established academician who has more than 20 years teaching experience. Her research interest are mainly in the area of separation processes (microwave-assisted extraction of active ingredient from herbal plant, CO2 absorption by alkanolamines and ionic liquids), advanced material processing using microwave heating and cleaner production/technology. She has to-date published more than 60 papers in journals and conference proceedings both locally and internationally. Seven PhD and three Master students had completed their degrees under her supervision and currently she is supervising eight PhD students and two Master students. Dr Rozita is also involved in a number of consultancy projects, especially in the area of cleaner production. On the administrative matters, Dr Rozita was the department OBE/EAC/MQA coordinator from 2005 to 2011. She was involved in restructuring the Chemical Engineering Programme according to OBE approach. She was also responsible to conduct various workshops to the staff on the OBE systems and accreditation.
show more »As a highly accomplished computer scientist and data mining expert with over 35 years of experience, I have demonstrated exceptional leadership, expertise, and vision in the field. Over the course of my career, I have achieved numerous successes and made significant contributions to the industry. I began as an entry-level computer programmer in 1988 and advanced to become a Professor of Data Mining at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Malaya. I obtained my tertiary academic qualifications from Oklahoma City University and the University of Malaya, and I have published more than 90 academic papers in top-tier journals, including Information Fusion and the International Journal of Information Management. I have a remarkable H-index and number of citations in Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholars databases, and I have supervised numerous students at all levels of study. My areas of research include data warehouse, data mining, deep learning, IoT, activity recognition, wearable sensors, accelerometers, heart arrhythmia, electrocardiograph, supraventricular premature beat, multivariate time series, edge computing, task scheduling, data streams, mobile computing, speaker verification, language recognition, clustering algorithms, MapReduce, stock market, and sentiment analysis. I have received several grants of more than RM one million, including public, international, and private grants, and I have completed two commercial data science projects for Petronas GTD and Air Liquide. I serve as an Associate Editor for Human-Media Interaction - Frontiers in Psychology and a reviewer for several high-quality journals. I am also an Expert Advisory Panel for Master of Science (Data Science) Degree Program at UTP, Programme Advisory Panel for Bachelor of Business (Honors) in Business Analytics at TARUC, and an external assessor of Swinburne University of Technology (BS of Computer Science program). Additionally, I am an External Assessor for Programme Master Sciences (Computer and Information Engineering), IIUM, and a technical assessor of Swiss National Science Foundation. I have been teaching data mining since 2002, and have produced many highly qualified data scientists and Ph.D. graduates who have gone on to work for top companies like IBM, Amazon Web Services, and Google.
