DR. TEO CHEE HOW

Dr. Teo Chee How received his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Leicester, the United Kingdom where his research was focusing on the distribution and diversity of repetitive DNAs in the Musa genome. He was involved in the development of retrotransposon-based molecular markers for Musa species identification. During his stays at the University of Leicester, he was involved in the fifth EU framework programme where, together with other partners in the framework, he developed universal tools to isolate pararetroviruses (EPRVs) and investigate the biodiversity of EPRV sequences. In addition, he successfully established a plant artificial minichromosome platform for crop improvement purposes during his post-doctorate period at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Gatersleben, Germany. In 2012 he returned to Malaysia to work at Agro-Biotechnology Institute (ABI) under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) as a Senior Research Officer before joining academic as Senior Lecturer at Taylor’s University in 2014. He joined the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR), the University of Malaya as a Senior Lecturer in 2016.

DR. DHARINI A/P PATHMANATHAN

As a statistician and data scientist with a foundation in statistical inference, I have expanded my expertise in time series and forecasting, mortality modelling, spatial statistics, functional data analysis, Bayesian statistics, machine learning and multivariate statistics through extensive research. I have collaborated with physicists, biologists, computer scientists, and experts from various fields to advance interdisciplinary initiatives. I have also conducted training on applied statistics and time series. Outside academia, I am trained in Indian Carnatic music (National champion), completed Grade 8 Piano from the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, London, and play various musical instruments. I find a close relationship between being musically inclined and mathematics.

DR. NG WEI LEIK

Dr. Ng Wei Leik is a primary care physician and senior lecturer at Universiti Malaya. His academic interests include pharmacogenomics and digital health, with a focus on applications relevant to primary care. In pharmacogenomics, Dr. Ng has been involved in studies exploring the role of genetic testing—particularly HLA-B*58:01 allele screening—to reduce adverse drug reactions in patients with gout. These efforts are part of broader collaborations with national health agencies to explore the integration of genomic tools into routine primary care. In parallel, Dr. Ng has contributed to digital health and e-learning initiatives aimed at supporting clinical practice and medical education. In the area of digital health, he has worked on symptom monitoring systems for COVID-19 and dengue, as well as decision support tools for managing low back pain. Dr. Ng is also part of an international research initiative focused on respiratory health, where he contributed to the development of a mobile-based early alert system aimed at improving asthma control using high-resolution air quality forecasts. His work in e-learning includes involvement in virtual patient simulations, interactive web-based modules, and regional e-learning collaborations. He has also participated in the development of evidence-informed e-learning resources for primary care physicians in Malaysia and Singapore. He is one of the coordinators for the university’s postgraduate Family Medicine training program, where he is actively involved in teaching, curriculum development, and assessment. He also serves as a regular research mentor with the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia.
