Sharmani Patricia Gabriel is Professor of English at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. Her work is situated at the intersections of literary studies, postcolonial theory, and cultural studies, with a focus on cultural identity and issues of diaspora, difference, representation, and power. She is the recipient of various awards, including the Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship Award, which she took up at the University of Leeds, UK, and Fulbright Fellowships at the University of Northern Illinois and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, USA. In addition to conducting research at the University of Michigan, she was also invited to develop and teach a course on Malaysian Literature in English. She has participated in international research projects and her articles have appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Ethnic and Racial Studies, Mosaic: A Journal for the Interdisciplinary Study of Literature, Critical Asian Studies, Ethnicities, and Cultural Dynamics. She has also edited and co-edited several books, the most recent of which is Orientalism and Reverse Orientalism in Literature and Film: Beyond East and West (Routledge, 2021). She is Editor-in-Chief of SARE: Southeast Asian Review of English and serves on the editorial board of several journals and book series. Sharmani is regularly invited to present keynotes and plenaries, at events within and beyond Malaysia, and has delivered public lectures in many countries including Indonesia, Spain, India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Japan, Australia, and the USA.
show more »Cheah Chia Wei graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. She then worked as a dental officer in the Ministry of Health, before joining the Faculty of Dentistry. There, she underwent specialist training in Periodontology and became a lecturer, teaching general dentists and specialists in Periodontology. She has a PhD related to oral microbial profiling using 16S rRNA gene sequencing in relation to the inflammatory status of rheumatoid arthritis subjects with periodontitis. Currently, Cheah Chia Wei is the discipline coordinator and clinical coordinator for the Periodontology Unit, postgraduate coordinator for Master of Oral Sciences (Periodontology) program, and also heads the Clinical Craniofacial Dental Research Group in the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Malaya. She is also the treasurer for The Malaysian Society of Oral Microbiologists and Oral Immunologists. Her research interests include extraction socket ridge preservation, periodontal/bone regenerative material for implantology, and oral microbiology influencing periodontal health and systemic health. She has published her work in peer-reviewed journals and has presented it both locally and abroad. Cheah Chia Wei also serves as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals in her area of expertise.
show more »Dr. Farahin Mohd Jais is a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering. She was a previous recipient of the Programme Mahasiswa Cemerlang under the JPA scholarship during her Master's in Engineering of Science (Environmental) studies, and later pursued her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering under the Skim Latihan Akademik Bumiputera (SLAB) fellowship. She specialized in water and wastewater treatment, with a focus on removing conventional and emerging water pollutants using carbon materials made from biomass waste. To date, she has synthesized water/wastewater treatment materials from a variety of biomass wastes, including spent coffee bean waste, pineapple leaf waste, palm shell waste, and sugarcane bagasse. Her experience in using adsorption technology for water/wastewater treatment has sparked her interest in diversifying into other technology including catalysis and membrane filtration.
