Professor Dr Gan Shiaw Sze @ Gan Gin Gin is a Professor in Internal Medicine and Clinical Haematology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. She graduated with honours from University of New South Wales, Australia and joined the Department of Medicine, University of Malaya as a lecturer in 2000 after obtaining her MRCP (UK) qualification. In addition to this, she is also a fellow of Academy of Medicine, Fellow of Academy of Science, Malaysia and a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh (UK). Believing in further improving herself, she obtained a Master’s degree with distinction in Clinical Medicine (Leadership & Management) from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2017. She is currently the head of Department of Medicine. She was the head of the division of clinical haematology in Department of Medicine, (2003 to 2018) and was instrumental in the improvement of haematology daycare services and expanding the haematology clinical services including haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in University Malaya Medical Centre. She has also written many guidelines for haematological procedures for University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and spearheaded the well-integrated medical daycare area. Professor Gan is active in Malaysian Society of Haematology where she was the President of the society (2022-2026), of which she remains as a council member. She previously held the position of vice president (2020-2022), honorary secretary (2004 to 2008) and council member (2008-2018). She has played a key role in shaping the training of clinical haematologists in Malaysia. She was the national chair of the Examination Subcommittee, past chairperson and current committee member of clinical haematology training in Malaysia. In addition, she is also one of the members of Malaysian Medical Council Education Specialty Sub-Committee for clinical haematology. Internationally, she is a respected member in the field of haematology. She the executive board member of Asia Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation group and one of the steering committee for Asian Myeloma Network (AMN) and Asia Pacific Myeloma & Related Diseases Registry. Professor Gan has contributed much to the transfer of her expertise and knowledge in her capacity as a national committee/panel member for formulating clinical practice guidelines on management of blood disorders and national policies on stem cell transplantation, which have served as reference nationwide. In addition, she has also been a key opinion leader in Asia Pacific region where she is active member for working groups and committees, developing consensus guidelines for management of haematological disorders in resource diverse settings. She is also actively involved in organizing national conferences and workshops for the continuous professional development for trainees and students. She has been invited to evaluate numerous grants and reviewer for many ISI (WOS) publications. Her interest in research, especially in genetic polymorphisms associated with haematological related diseases, haematopoietic stem cell transplantation & cellular therapy, lymphoma and myeloma has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. Besides this, she is actively involved in multiple international clinical trials. She has been engaged as speaker, chairperson for many workshops/seminars and international conferences. Apart from that, she has also been awarded several times of excellent service awards for her contributions to academic services and clinical services at the University of Malaya.
show more »Dr. Aslina Pahrudin Arrozi obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2013, followed by a Master's in Medical Science (Biochemistry) from the same university in 2018. Her dedication to expanding her knowledge led her to pursue studies in Japan under the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan. She successfully completed her PhD in Medical Science from Shiga University of Medical Science (SUMS), Japan, in 2022. Following this, she served as an assistant professor at the Molecular Neuroscience Research Center and Medical Innovation Research Center, SUMS, until September 2023 before joining Universiti Malaya as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Molecular Medicine in November of the same year. Her research interest is molecular and cellular neuroscience. Previously, she investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Alzheimer's. Her research also explored how natural products can modulate molecular changes in the brain affected by neurodegenerative conditions. She aims to integrate biochemistry, neuroscience and pharmacology to develop therapies that not only prevent neurodegeneration but also enhance neuroprotection and improve cognitive health. As a young researcher, she has made significant contributions, publishing numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and presenting her research at several national and international conferences. With a strong commitment to neuroscience, she is keen to partner with other fields to enhance and diversify her research focus.
show more »Professor Dr. Syarida Hasnur Safii is a Professor and Consultant Periodontist at the Universiti Malaya, where she currently serves as Deputy Dean (Clinical Services) of the Faculty of Dentistry. She is based at the Department of Restorative Dentistry and has held several key academic leadership roles, including Head of Department and Head of the Periodontology Discipline. Professor Safii obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia before pursuing specialist training in Periodontology at King’s College London, where she was awarded the Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) and Membership in Restorative Dentistry (MRD) from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She later completed her PhD in Periodontology at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Her areas of expertise include periodontology, implant dentistry, and dental education. Her research focuses on the biological and clinical aspects of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, host–microbial interactions, adjunctive antimicrobial therapies, natural products in periodontal healing, and the relationship between systemic conditions and periodontal health. She has also contributed significantly to dental education research, particularly in personalised learning, student-centred pedagogy, and the integration of machine learning in educational design. Professor Safii has published extensively in high-impact international journals, including Clinical Oral Investigations, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research, BMC Oral Health, Archives of Oral Biology, and Pharmaceutics. She has led and co-led numerous nationally funded research grants, including projects under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia) and multiple internal research grants at Universiti Malaya. Her current research includes longitudinal studies on peri-implant inflammation, periodontal stability, synbiotic adjuncts in non-surgical therapy, and health economics of periodontitis management. She actively supervises postgraduate candidates at PhD and Master’s levels in areas spanning periodontal microbiology, biomarker research, implant biology, regenerative therapies, health economics, and dental education. She also teaches extensively in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Master of Oral Science, and specialist doctoral programmes in Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry, and Prosthodontics. At the international and national levels, Professor Safii contributes as an external examiner for specialist and doctoral programmes, including appointments with the The Royal College of Surgeons of England and multiple Malaysian universities. She serves as Associate Editor for BMC Oral Health and the Periodontology Journal, and is an active reviewer for numerous indexed journals. She is also an assessor for the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and international grant bodies.
