Dr Reena Rajasuriar is a Clinical Pharmacist by training and an Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine, University Malaya (UM). She also holds an adjunct position as a Fellow at the Department of Infectious Diseases, University of Melbourne, Australia. She leads the research unit at the Department of Medicine, UM and is Head of the Immunotherapeutics Laboratory (ITL), a core immunology research laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine, UM. Dr Rajasuriar completed her PhD in Immunogenetics at Monash University, Australia and now leads a translational research program in HIV and Aging at the Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS (CERiA). Her training as a clinical and basic scientist has afforded Dr Rajasuriar the expertise to perform multidisciplinary research spanning basic, clinical and implementation studies. Her research focuses on understanding drivers of accelerated aging in people living with HIV and its interaction with functional aging outcomes. She is also invested in understanding how integrated HIV care can best be implemented in resource limited settings to promote healthy aging. Dr Rajasuriar has published extensively on the intersection of HIV and aging, and is an international leader in advancing the knowledge in this field, having delivered multiple plenaries at international forums, co-authored multiple opinion pieces and viewpoints as well as contributed to the development of consensus statements around this subject matter. Together with members of her team, she was instrumental in developing the first ECHO training program on HIV and Aging for the Asia Pacific region to advance capacity building for health professionals providing care for people with HIV. She is also the Principal Investigator of the only HIV and aging cohort in the Asia Pacific region studying aging from a multidimensional perspective, with over a decade of follow up (2014-2024). Dr Rajasuriar’s work is funded by various national and international funding bodies including the National Institutes of Health, US, the American Foundation for AIDS Research and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia. She has received multiple accolades including the Australia-APEC Women in Research Fellowship (2015), the Loreal-UNESCO For Women in Science Malaysia Fellowship (2016), the IAS Research-for-Cure Academy Fellowship (2018), the CIRA International Visiting Fellowship to Yale (2019), the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) Scholars Award (2023) and most recently, the Fulbright Malaysian Scholar Award (2024).
show more »Siti Aisyah Samudin is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Syariah and Law Department, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Malaysia. She graduated with a Diploma in Syariah and Islamic Jurisprudence with honors class one from the International Islamic University College of Selangor in 2011. In 2015, she was awarded a Bachelor Degree in Syariah and Law with honors class one from the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya. She completed her doctoral studies in 2019 at the same university in which she specialized in Islamic tort and Islamic criminal justice. Her areas of expertise and research interests are Islamic criminal law, social justice, negligence, tort and consumerism. Her research delves into the critical need for harmonizing Islamic law with existing compensation methods, including Malaysian law and insurance, to offer comprehensive protection to victims and their rights. Actively engaged in research and writing, she is dedicated to exploring and applying legal principles to ensure fairness and justice in safeguarding individual and collective rights. Her work also examines the pivotal role of insurance and takaful, as well as the potential of diyat in the realm of damages, making significant strides in the field of legal protection and compensation. Her current research exploring issues related to the rights of persons with disabilities (PWD) and the elderly, particularly in terms of accessibility, social justice, and inclusivity. She believe these issues require deeper attention. Her previous research is on the need for an approach of harmonisation between diyya and existing compensation method including Malaysian law and insurance, to provide comprehensive protection to victims of road accidents. She is currently active in research and writing articles, especially on Islamic offences as well as the compensation and justice for road traffic accident victims in Malaysia, the role of Insurance and Takaful as well as the potential of diyat in the area of damages. She was the recipients for Gold Medal Poster Exhibition Research University Malaya 2019. She is currently supervising 6 masters students and 12 PhD students. Outside the University, she is an exco member of al-Mukhlisin Foundation (an NGO).
show more »Associate Professor Dr. Lau May Nak serves as an Associate Professor and Consultant Orthodontist at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. She obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from the University of Malaya in 2008. After working as a dental officer in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia for 5 years, she pursued further studies at the University of Malaya, graduating with a Master of Orthodontics (With Distinction) and Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2017. Joining the University of Malaya as a lecturer in 2018, Dr. Lau is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting research, and treating orthodontic and obstructive sleep apnoea patients. She is among the pioneers who established a multidisciplinary team with various medical and dental specialists at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for the management of obstructive sleep apnoea. She also serves in the Combined Oro-Craniomaxillofacial Deformities Clinic and Combined Paediatric Saliva Control Clinic at UMMC. Dr. Lau's research interests span a wide range of topics including orthodontics, anchorage, retention and relapse, teaching and learning methodologies, mandibular advancement appliance therapy, obstructive sleep apnoea, orthodontic materials, 3D printing, and orthognathic surgery. She holds the honorary position of assistant secretary at the Malaysian Association of Orthodontists, and she is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Glasgow. Additionally, Dr. Lau is a life member of the International Association of Student Clinicians – American Dental Association (SCADA).
