ASSOCIATE PROF. IR. DR. NUR AZAH BINTI HAMZAID

Ir Dr Nur Azah Hamzaid is a Professional Engineer (BEM) and Chartered Engineer (IMechE, UK). She is Associate Professor at Biomedical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaya. She obtained her bachelor in Mechatronics Engineering (1st class Hons) in 2005 and pursued her PhD at the University of Sydney, Australia in the same year. Since 2010, she has been pioneering the Biomechatronics, Neuroprosthetics and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) research group in Malaysia. She is  a Biomedical Engineering Consultant at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), seeing patients of complex rehabilitation cases at the Rehabilitation Robotics Clinic (CREATE). Dr Azah holds a Masters Certificate in Leadership by the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development, Malaysia. Her passion in teaching and learning led her to leadership roles in Academic Development and Enhancement Centre (ADEC) for 8 years under the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) office, and was the Director until early 2024. She is also a Certified Trainer under HRDCorp. Dr Azah develops the Biomechatronics and Prosthetics & Orthotics courses which include FES in Rehabilitation Robotics. In her second year of service in UM, in 2011, she was appointed as the Program Coordinator of Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering (Prosthetics & Orthotics), the first degree program aiming to produce Prosthetics & Orthotics Engineers in Malaysia. Dr Azah is the Founding President and currently Vice President of International FES Society (IFESS) Malaysia Chapter and Executive Board Member of IFESS International for the 3rd term. She was Board Member of International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics Malaysia. She is also the co-founder of the engineering outreach program  "Let's Go To Mummie's Lab", which focuses on young children's education through STEM and play. She has published at least 90 ISI-listed scientific publications, over 50 conference papers, a number of books and book chapters. Dr Azah has a few patents and trademarks, granted and filed. Her FES expertise has also brought her to the 2016 FES-Cycling Cybathlon championship, a world event for technology-assisted race for people with disabilities, in which their team placed 7th in the world. Dr Azah has so far graduated and are supervising several PhD and MEngSc students. She has also won Innovation Awards from ITEX, PECIPTA, Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE), BioMalaysia, i-ENVEX, KNovasi, and her work has been featured in national mass media including BFM radio, Nona TV3, Selamat Pagi Malaysia RTM, Mingguan Wanita, and other local newspapers, apart from UM Award for PhD completion in less than 3 years. She was also nominated for the UNESCO Award for the Popularization of Science in 2019. Her aim is to improve the Rehabilitation Engineering field in Malaysia by uplifting the knowledge and application through quality teaching and curriculum enhancement via industrial involvement, better student experience and participation in and out of class and in research. ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. CHIU CHEE KIDD

Dr. Chiu Chee Kidd is an Associate Professor in University of Malaya and a Consultant Spine Surgeon in University Malaya Specialist Centre. He specializes in spinal surgery for patients with disorders of the thoracic and lumbar spine with focus on degenerative, deformity and traumatic pathologies. Dr. Chiu is an active member of numerous professional spine societies such as the Malaysian Spine Society (MSS), Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS), AOSpine and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). Dr. Chiu’s expertise was grounded on his research on spinal disorders and had published his researches in both local and international journals. His master’s degree thesis won the “Singapore Medical Journal Best Published Article of the Year”. His researches also won several awards in local and international conferences. Amongst them were the International Minimal Invasive Surgery Spine Congress Best Oral Paper Presentation Award, 4th International MSS Scientific Congress Best Research Award, Bioeconomy Innovation Award, PECIPTA 2017 Gold Award, Asia Pacific Spine Society & Asian Spine Journal Best Clinical Research Award, 47th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Spine Surgery and Related Research English Presentation Award, 1st Annual Meeting of the Singapore Spine Society First Prize Award, Malaysian Spine Society Presidential Best Research Award, 48th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Spine Surgery and Related Research Gold Prize English Presentation Award and Korean Society of Spine Surgery Best Paper Award. Dr. Chiu is a peer reviewer for several local and international journals such as Scientific Reports, PLoS ONE, BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, Acta Orthopaedica et Traumatologica Turcica, Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal, Journal of Orthoapedic Surgery, Asian Spine Journal, Journal of Investigative Surgery, Clinical Interventions in Aging, Current Medical Research & Opinion and Medical Devices Evidence and Research. He had been awarded as the “top ten reviewer” by Journal of Orthoapedic Surgery.

PROF. DR. SHIREENE RATNA A/P D B VETHAKKAN

Professor Dr. Shireene Ratna Vethakkan obtained her MBBS from the University of Malaya, and Masters of Internal Medicine from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She then underwent endocrine training at the University of Malaya Medical Centre and a fellowship at the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. This was followed by an MD(Doctorate of Medicine-Research) at the University of Melbourne focusing on the evaluation of islet-function and insulin-sensitivity post-islet transplantation in patients with Type 1 diabetes. Her expertise lies in the fields of diabetology and reproductive endocrinology, in particular human islet-transplantation, lipotoxicity and beta-cell function. She is skilled in the evaluation of beta-cell function/insulin sensitivity utilizing computer modelling and the IVGTT, and can also conduct clamp studies. She was Head of the Division of Endocrinology&Diabetes , Department of Medicine, University of Malaya from 2012-2022. She holds several grants and has a passion for clinical research in the field of diabetes in pregnancy and metabolic associated steatotic liver disease.  She has published papers in the  Bristish Journal of Obstetrics & Endocrinology, Clinical Endocrinology, Diabetes Research & Clinical Practice, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Clinical Lipidology,Clinical Nutrition,Transplantation, Endocrine Practice, Diabetic Medicine and Journal of Diabetes Investigation. She has also supervised to completion many PhD, Masters of Science, Masters of Medicine students and Endocrine Subspecialty Fellows.  Dr. Vethakkan is also an experienced consultant endocrinologist/physician and runs several busy clinics including the combined antenatal endocrine clinic at the University of Malaya Medical Centre.
