DR. THANALACHIME A/P PERUMAL

Dr. Thanalachime Perumal joined academic life as a senior lecturer in Faculty Languages and Linguistics at  The University of Malaya since 15 July 2016. Currently, she is a lecturer for Tamil Program at the Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics. She completed her Doctoral degree  (Discourse Analysis) at University Putra Malaysia; her Masters of Modern Languages at the University of Malaya,  her Diploma in Language & Culture at University Malaya and completed teaching certificate  (Tamil) at Raja Melewer Teaching College. Her main research interests are Discourse Analysis, Tamil teaching, and learning, Media discourse, and translations. Her teaching interests are broadly within Discourse Analysis (esp Media discourse), Sociolinguistic and Translation. She welcomes proposal for Ph.D. or Master research project on any aspect of Global Tamil, areas of particular interest include: Tamil language in higher education, Language ideological debates relating to global Tamil, Intelligibility issues relating to the spread of Tamil, Attitudes towards Tamil Language, Tamil language in higher education contexts around the world, Tamil Special Purpose (CSP) in Mass Media and Language structure-Tamil syntax.

ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. KHOR SOOK MEI

Dr. Sook Mei Khor holds a B.Sc. degree (Hons) from the University of Malaysia (UKM) in Applied Chemistry (2002). She moved on with her M.Sc. studies at UKM under Prof. Dr. Yook Heng Lee and Prof. Dato' Dr. Musa Ahmad's supervision (2002-2004). Since completing her M.Sc. research, she served as an R&D chemist for two years before being assigned to the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, UM (2006-2008) as a science officer. She moved to Sydney, Australia, in 2008 to pursue her Ph.D. after acquiring some work experience in the industry under a Malaysian government scholarship (UM SLAI research fellowship). She received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia (2008–2011) under the guidance of Scientia Prof. Dr. John Justin Gooding (a great researcher, also a kind and awesome supervisor). She works in the field of electrochemistry, focusing on enzyme/affinity biosensors and the modification of the electrode surface. She currently leads a research group focused on the boundaries of analytical chemistry, analytical biochemistry, food safety and risk assessment, and electroanalytical chemistry, designing various types of (bio)sensors for analytical applications.

MISS SITI AISYA BINTI ABDUL RAHMAN

Aisya Abdul Rahman is a former Legal Adviser at the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) and Head of Law Division at Malaysia’s national human rights institution, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). For over a decade, she has worked with diverse stakeholders at all levels to support and promote respect for the rule of law, internationally and domestically. Aisya has provided technical guidance and support to decisionmakers and policymakers in many areas of international humanitarian and human rights law implementation. She has actively contributed to regional and national implementing law processes and projects, including in relation to the translation of the Geneva Conventions, child protection, sexual and gender based violence, and gender equality. She has also facilitated high-level humanitarian dialogues; delivered humanitarian assistance to detainees; and developed dissemination tools and materials. She also assisted rule of law, human rights, transitional justice, and post-conflict development projects in/on Colombia, Ukraine, Scotland, and South Sudan. Within her first four years of practice at the Malaysian Bar, Aisya appeared as counsel in over 15 reported cases at all levels of Malaysian courts, including a landmark workplace sexual harassment case.
