Associate Professor Dr. Selamat Amir was born in the small village town Kg. Pangkalan Kunak , Sabah. His early studies began at SK Pekan Kunak and al-Madrasah al-Thanawiyyah al-Diniyyah al-Islamiyyah Kunak (SMUIK). He was then was offered to pursue foundation study at the Islamic Studies Foundation level of the University of Malaya, Nilam Puri Kelantan. then completed his studies at the Bachelor's Degree level in Usuluddin (Major in al-Quran and al-Hadith) with distinction. At the same time, he was also involved in Advanced Arabic Language Courses at Qatar University. He received a scholarship offer and sponsorship to continue his studies directly to the level of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the field of 'Tafsir and Quranic Studies'. Until now, his areas of expertise have included Quranic and Tafsir Studies, Quranic Exegesis, Methodology of Quranic Exegesis, Usul Tafsir, Al-Qur'an and Science, Quranic Philosophy, I'jaz Al-Quran, Al-Quran and ICT . His expertise and experience are further highlighted by his active involvement in the field of research and academic writing when he has published 14 books, 21 book chapters, 30 journal articles, 12 proceedings papers, 170 other publications (including mass media publications) and presented research at 27 international conferences. (about 243 publications in total by August 2023). All of these writings cover areas of Quranic and Tafsir Studies, Quranic Exegesis, Methodology of Quranic Exegesis, Usul Tafsir, Al-Qur'an and Science, Quranic Philosophy, I'jaz Al-Quran, Al-Quran and ICT. In fact, he also supervises postgraduate candidates in and outside the country at the master's and doctoral levels. In addition, he also received research grants from various funding including government agencies, universities, non- governmental organizations, industries and faculty grants with a cumulative grant amount totaling with totals around RM 2,350,000.00 (RM 2.3 million, until Oktober 2024) As a result of his active involvement in research and experience in the field of Tafsir and Quranic Studies, he has been appointed as an expert panel referring to the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) and the Malaysian National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) for the review of Al-Quran interpretation and translation as well as current issues related to the study of al-Quran interpretation in Malaysia. he also was appointed as an expert panel to the Sabah State Department of Islamic Religious Affairs (JHEAINS) and Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS). His expertise is also needed in the context of the national mass media when he is also invited to give his views on the National TV channel, Selamat Pagi Malaysia, TV1 RTM and Apa Khabar Malaysia, Bernama TV as well as Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia newspaper columns. In addition, he was also invited to collaborate with the Publication Planning Division, Department of Broadcasting Malaysia, RTM for the publication of 165 articles (Jan 2022 - August 2023) for Radio Klasik RTM. His expertise and contribution were also recognized by receiving several awards in research and being invited as a speaker and panel expert at national and international level. In addition, Dr. Selamat also shared his experience and research abroad such as at Qatar University, France Sorbonne University, London Oxford University Islamic Studies Research Centre, Jordan University WISE, Saudi Arabia's Madinah Islamic University and Istanbul University, Turkey, also Universitas Darussalam Gontor Indonesia. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Al-Quran and Al-Hadith, Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya Kuala Lumpur and is a Fellow at the Centre of Quranic Research, University of Malaya (CQR).
show more »Dr. Nadirah Mat Pozian is a feminist public health scholar passionate about advancing gender equity and women’s well-being in Southeast Asia. She explores how gendered structures, social norms, and systemic inequalities shape women’s participation in work, access to health services, and overall life outcomes. Her work turns feminist research into practical solutions that improve policies, workplaces, and community programs. She collaborates with policymakers, NGOs, community groups, and global health stakeholders to design research that is inclusive, participatory, and transformative. She has led multi-country studies, facilitated stakeholder dialogues, and contributed to regional and UN-level policy initiatives on gender-responsive health systems and workplace equity. Nadirah’s research uses qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews, surveys, focus groups, and co-design workshops. She focuses on sensitive issues such as gender-based violence, maternal and reproductive health, and workplace inequities, ensuring women’s voices guide policy and practice. Her work bridges research, advocacy, and policy, advancing inclusive, feminist-centred approaches that centre women’s rights, agency, and care in health and social systems. Her publications include Family-Friendly Work Conditions and Well-Being Among Malaysian Women (2024) and Barriers Faced by Australian and New Zealand Women When Sharing Experiences of Family Violence with Primary Healthcare Providers (2023). She is currently writing her first book on family-friendly policies and family planning, focusing on Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Her areas of expertise include Renal Nursing, Research & Statistics, Nursing Education, and Clinical Nursing. With extensive experience in supervising students in clinical areas and nursing research, Dr. Tang has made significant contributions to the field of nursing both academically and professionally. As an Assessor for the Nursing Board Malaysia, Dr. Tang is crucial in curriculum evaluation and accreditation visits to various public and private institutions. This position allows her to ensure that nursing programs maintain high standards and continue to evolve to meet the needs of the healthcare industry. Dr. Tang's research projects are diverse and impactful. She has led studies on online learning for nursing education (PV039-2021) and psychosocial approaches and behavioral interventions in preventing the spread of infection in hospital ICUs (TR001A-2020). These projects highlight her commitment to improving nursing education and patient care practices. Throughout her career, Dr. Tang has held numerous administrative roles. Since January 2024, she has served as the Head of the Department of Nursing Science, where she oversees the department's strategic direction and fosters an environment of academic excellence. Her appointment as a member of the Public University Nursing Board from October 2024 to December 2025 further underscores her leadership and expertise. Dr. Tang's role as a course coordinator for several critical courses, such as nursing research and statistics, demonstrates her dedication to providing comprehensive education to nursing students. Her involvement in various task forces and committees within the department and university showcases her commitment to policy and curriculum development, ensuring that UM remains a leader in nursing education. Her research contributions extend beyond the classroom. Dr. Tang has co-researched several projects funded by prestigious grants, including the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) and the Covid-19 Special Research Grant. These projects cover a wide range of topics, from food safety practices among food truck vendors to mental wellbeing in the community during the Covid-19 pandemic. Administrative duties have been a significant part of Dr. Tang's career. She has held various roles, including Head of Department since January 2024, member of the Public University Nursing Board, and course coordinator for multiple nursing courses. Her involvement in numerous task forces and committees highlights her dedication to improving nursing education and practice.
