Currently is a Professor at Shariah and Law Department, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Studied at University of Malaya. Received Bachelor of Shariah (Islamic Law) (first class honours) in 1987 from University of Malaya. Later, went to London to receive further training at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and obtained LL.M in 1989 and PhD in 1996. Area of specialization is Islamic law of transactions and property, contemporary issues of fatwa and Shariah courts in Malaysia. Has been teaching at the University of Malaya since 1987 both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Awarded a number of governmental and international research fund with the accumulative amount of RM600,000. Has successfully supervised more than 30 postgraduate thesis and dissertations. Written and presented more than 100 articles and papers in journals and conference both locally and internationally. Authored and edited six books. Served as consultant and adviser on Shariah matters to several Banks and financial institutions in Malaysia and Singapore. Currently served as Chairman of the Shariah Supervisory Council for Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (BIMB) and Amanah Raya Berhad. Qualified Shariah Legal Counsel in the Federal Territory Shariah Courts. Appointed as visiting lecturer at Religious Department, Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand in 2001, awarded as visiting research associate at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, UK in 2005, visiting fellow at Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London in 2006, visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA in 2011, Ankara Social Sciences University, Universitas Islam Negeri Jakarta and Soka University Japan in 2019 respectively. Hold various administrative posts at University of Malaya as Head of Shariah and Law Department 1997-1999, Deputy Director for Research and Development, Academy of Islamic Studies 2005-2006 and Director of Academy of Islamic Studies 2006-2011. Involved in curricula development, design and monitoring of Islamic Shariah Higher Degrees at University and national level as Senate Member of the University, member of the national accreditation committee of Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) 2010-2019, auditor and panel assessor for the same agency since 1997. Conferred DSDK by His Majesty the Sultan of Kedah which carries the title Dato' in the conjunction of His Highness 88th birthday on 17th January 2016 for excellent and loyal service. show more »I obtained my BSc and PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Dundee (UK), joined the University of Malaya as a tutor in 1979, and was promoted to Professor of Pharmacology in 2000. I was the Head of the Department of Pharmacology for over 18 years from 1994, which ended in August 2014, following my appointment into the university's Board of Directors (BOD). My appointment as member of BOD ended in Dec 2015. My main research currently is in pharmacogenomics (PGx), being the country representative on PGx research for an international group (Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative under the National Institute of Health, USA) and 2 regional groups (including the Southeast Asian Pharmacogenomics Network). PGx is currently one of the fastest growing research area globally and I have supervised over 25 postgraduate students in this field over the years. My laboratory was awarded research funding of over RM3.5 million over a period of 5 years from 2011 to 2015, and our team has published over 105 papers since then. I have been invited to speak on PGx at international and national conferences. I am also a member of at least 7 committees at the national level, the most significant being the National Committee for Clinical Research (NCCR), chaired by the Director-General of Health, Malaysia. My expertise in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is recognised, being invited to be a speaker and facilitator at GCP Workshops throughout the country. My expertise also extends to being a consultant for contract research in the form of Bioequivalence (BE) Studies for various generic drug manufacturers since 1999, and to date, we have completed over 32 consultancies. My Bioequivalence Centre has two accreditations, one under SAMM ISO-IEC 17025/2001, and the other is under Ministry of Health, and is one of only four accredited centres in Malaysia. I was appointed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations, to be a member of the National Bioethics Council (NBC) and presented the Keynote Address at its launch. I have been a Vice-Chairman of NBC. I was also appointed by the Deputy Prime Minister (who was also then the Minister of Education), to be a representive of the University's Senate to the University's Board of Directors, the appointment ended in Dec 2015. I am also an active member of several NGOs, and frequently and passionately participate in various community and student events.

Throughout her studies, she has received several awards, including the Hadiah Association of Building Engineers (ABE) in the UK, a Bronze award for her poster presentation at the International Research Innovation, Invention & Solution Exposition (IRIISE) 2018, and the Best Presenter award at the 11th ASEAN Postgraduate Seminar 2017.
