Dr. Foong Chan Choong is an expert in educational psychology, interdisciplinary studies, curriculum design, and psychometric. Dr. Foong, an Associate Professor at the Medical Education and Research Development Unit (MERDU) of the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya, is an educator and researcher in the field of health professions education. He has been conferred the honor of Fellow of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) PSG Regional Institute, India, and holds a first-class honors bachelor's degree in Science with Education from Universiti Malaya, where he also obtained his PhD in Education. Dr. Foong joined MERDU in 2013 and played a crucial role in the development of the university's new undergraduate medical curriculum. He initiated a new curriculum development project at the post-graduate level and in 2016, he developed the Master of Medical Education, which commenced in 2018 and he has been serving as the founding program coordinator until now. He is also responsible for teaching educational psychology, instructional design, and research methodology for the master's program. His proficiency and deep understanding of the development, implementation, and improvement of outcome-based education (OBE) academic programmes have led to his appointment as the Programme Quality Assurance Expert (ProQAE) at Universiti Malaya. In this role, he regularly advises and evaluates accreditation for academic programs as the chairperson of the accreditation panel. Dr. Foong Chan Choong is an educationist of great accomplishment, who has dedicated his career to teaching and research. With a passion for interacting with students and teacher trainees, he finds great satisfaction and motivation in his work. Currently, he is involved in teaching the Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Physics specialisation) at the Faculty of Education. In addition to his role in medical education / health professions education, Dr. Foong has also ventured into the field of engineering education. He is a lifelong learner, constantly seeking out new knowledge and experiences. His current research is multidisciplinary in nature, spanning the medical, dental and other health professions, engineering, physics and music education. Dr. Foong's research interests are diverse, with many of his publications focusing on educational psychology. To date, he has published more than 70 publications. He holds several editorial positions, including associate editor for the Annals of Medicine (Medical Education section) (WoS Journal Citation Report 2024 Quartile 1), executive editor for the Malaysian Journal of Qualitative Research, and editorial board member for several international journals (WoS Journal Citation Report 2024 Quartile 1). Dr. Foong plays an active role in the academic community. At present, he is the executive treasurer for the Qualitative Research Association Malaysia and also serves as an executive committee member for the Malaysian Association of Education in Medical and Health Sciences (MAEMHS). In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Foong is also an innovator, with several of his projects receiving recognition at the university, national, and international levels. He is also involved in community service, coaching the debate team at his alma mater, a secondary school in Perak. show more »Shirley Chua Jin Lin holds a PhD degree in Asset & Facilities Management and Bachelor degree in Building Surveying from the Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Her research interests are in Facilities Management and Analytic Hierarchy Process. She has also been involved in various research grants and has published some ISI and Scopus-indexed technical publications in journals and proceedings pertaining building maintenance and facilities management. She has also received a few awards throughout her studies and career path which include Building Surveying Excellent Award, Universiti Malaya Book Prize, Universiti Malaya Excellence Award 2015, Certificate of Excellent Service 2018 and Excellence Service Award 2020.
show more »Dr Sarinder was awarded a Bachelor of Computer Science in 2000 and a Master in Computer Science in 2002 from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University Malaya (UM). She then completed her Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya in 2007. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the same department. Dr. Sarinder has been very active in teaching, supervision, publication, research, and administration. She has taught courses such as Introduction to Database Systems, Advanced Database and Big Data, Programming in Bioinformatics, Data Analytics in Biology, Algorithms and Tools in Bioinformatics, and Computing at Master and undergraduate levels. She is also the Principal Investigator of the Data Science & Bioinformatics Laboratory at UM which has a team of both local and international collaborators from the University Malaya Medical Centre, UM Cancer Institute, Monash University Malaya, University of Cambridge, and the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Sarinder’s main research interest is managing, representing, and analyzing scientific data using computational tools and techniques. Her contribution towards these projects is mostly in building digital systems using visual analytics, databases, and data science techniques. Currently, she is engaged in a project on Electronic Medical Records (EMR) at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), mainly in building the Breast Cancer Digital Ecosystem using scientifically driven clinical informatics solutions for efficient clinical workflow. Dr Sarinder is also working with genome scientists from the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan to develop a framework for finding novel therapeutics for metastatic cancer using bioinformatics tools and algorithms. Dr Sarinder is on the Editorial Board of BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Medical Informatics, and Decision Making and an Associate Editor of the Malaysian Journal of Science (MJS). She was also the chair of the International Symposium on Biomedical Data Infrastructure 2013 and 4th Data Analytics in Biomedicine Workshop (DAB 2013) organized by IEEE. Dr Sarinder was also a Visiting Scholar at the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, UK, and a Visiting Professor and External Examiner for the Bachelor of Bioinformatics (Hons) Program at Management and Science University (MSU), Malaysia. She is on the MQA Panel of Assessors for Multimedia University and International Medical University Malaysia. Dr Sarinder is an exco-member of Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network and an auditor for the Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics.
