Sharmani Patricia Gabriel is Professor of English at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. Her work is situated at the intersections of literary studies, postcolonial theory, and cultural studies, with a focus on cultural identity and issues of diaspora, difference, representation, and power. She is the recipient of various awards, including the Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship Award, which she took up at the University of Leeds, UK, and Fulbright Fellowships at the University of Northern Illinois and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, USA. In addition to conducting research at the University of Michigan, she was also invited to develop and teach a course on Malaysian Literature in English. She has participated in international research projects and her articles have appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Ethnic and Racial Studies, Mosaic: A Journal for the Interdisciplinary Study of Literature, Critical Asian Studies, Ethnicities, and Cultural Dynamics. She has also edited and co-edited several books, the most recent of which is Orientalism and Reverse Orientalism in Literature and Film: Beyond East and West (Routledge, 2021). She is Editor-in-Chief of SARE: Southeast Asian Review of English and serves on the editorial board of several journals and book series. Sharmani is regularly invited to present keynotes and plenaries, at events within and beyond Malaysia, and has delivered public lectures in many countries including Indonesia, Spain, India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Japan, Australia, and the USA.
show more »Fatin Nur Majdina Nordin is a senior lecturer in the Programme of Applied Science with Islamic Studies at the Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya. Her academic work focuses on integrating scientific knowledge with Islamic principles, particularly in the areas of hygiene, health, and halal science. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Applied Science with Islamic Studies (BAScIStud) majoring in Biohealth Science, and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Medicine (Dentistry and Islamic Studies), where she examined the use of Salvadora persica (miswak) in oral health care. She later pursued a PhD in Science, Technology, and Health, focusing on cosmetic safety, where she explored the risks of cosmetic ingredients and the effectiveness of product labels in communicating ingredient risks. Her research interests include health and well-being, halal science, hygiene and environmental health, knowledge integration, and the role of women in Islam. In addition to her academic contributions, she is involved in initiatives related to mental hygiene awareness, environmental sustainability, and women's empowerment within the framework of Islamic principles. Her work aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of science and its applications within an Islamic context, fostering interdisciplinary research and education.
show more »Dr. Saharuddin bin Mohamad received his Bachelor of Engineering (Bioengineering) in 1998 and Master of Engineering (Bioengineering) in 2000 from the University of Tokushima, Japan. He successfully completed his Doctor of Engineering degree in functional system engineering in 2003 at the same university. Then, he took up a post-doctoral position in bioinformatics at Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan until 2004. He was appointed as lecturer in Bioinformatics Program, Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya ever since. His research interest focuses on structural bioinformatics, with special interest in computer-aided drug design and protein engineering. He also engages in molecular bioinformatics research projects related to analysis and data mining of the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data in genomics, metagenomics, whole-exomic and trancriptomics. Furthermore, he involves in translational bioinformatics research projects with his collaborators from Institute of Medical Research, Malaysia. He actively involves in teaching and development of courses for Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics) and Master of Bioinformatics at the University of Malaya. He served as Programme Coordinator for Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics) Degree Program from 2013 to 2014 and re-appointed as the coordinator from 2019 to 2020. He was appointed as Advisory Board Member of MyBioInfoNet (Malaysia Bioinformatics Network) for 2019-2021 session. He was elected as vice president of the Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (MaSBiC) for 2018-2020 and 2020-2022 session. He was appointed as the Head of Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science from January 2020 to January 2022. Currently, he serves as the Head of Centre of Research in Systems Biology, Structural, Bioinformatics and Human Digital Imaging (CRYSTAL), University of Malaya since 2017.
