Dr. Saharuddin bin Mohamad received his Bachelor of Engineering (Bioengineering) in 1998 and Master of Engineering (Bioengineering) in 2000 from Tokushima University, Japan. He subsequently obtained his Doctor of Engineering degree in Functional Systems Engineering from the same university in 2003. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook a postdoctoral position in bioinformatics at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, until 2004.

He joined the Bioinformatics Programme at the Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, as a lecturer in 2004 and has since held various academic and leadership positions within the university.

His research interests focus on structural bioinformatics, particularly computer-aided drug design and protein engineering. He is also actively involved in molecular bioinformatics research, including the analysis and data mining of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data in genomics, metagenomics, whole-exome sequencing, and transcriptomics. More recently, his research has expanded into the application of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data mining techniques for the analysis and interpretation of complex biological data, with applications in precision medicine, biomarker discovery, and translational bioinformatics. In addition, he collaborates on translational bioinformatics research projects with researchers from the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia.

Dr. Saharuddin has been actively involved in teaching and curriculum development for the Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics) and Master of Bioinformatics programmes at Universiti Malaya. He served as Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics) programme at the Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, from 2013 to 2014, was reappointed from 2019 to 2020, and currently serves another term from 2024 to 2027. He was appointed Head of the Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, from January 2020 to January 2022.

Beyond the university, he served as an Advisory Board Member of MyBioInfoNet (Malaysia Bioinformatics Network) for the 2019–2021 term. He was elected Vice President of the Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (MaSBiC) for two consecutive terms, 2018–2020 and 2020–2022. Since 2017, he has served as the Head of the Centre of Research in Systems Biology, Structural Bioinformatics and Human Digital Imaging (CRYSTAL), Universiti Malaya.
