Dr. Juliana Usman is an Associate Professor from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Universiti Malaya. She is a member of the Centre for Applied Biomechanics, UM and the appointed secretary for the Malaysian Society of Biomechanics. She had served as the Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department in the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaya from 2019 to 2021. She is a certified Chartered Engineer (CEng) from the Engineering Council of UK and a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (UK) and the Board of Engineers (Malaysia). Her research areas are in Sports Biomechanics (Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement) and in Biomechanics and Motion Analysis. Dr Juliana has been active in research and in obtaining research grants from internal and external resources with 10 grants as the Principal Investigator (PI) and 11 as co-PI totalling to about RM1.5M in research grants. Her research include researches on knee OA biomechanics analysis and intervention, biomechanical investigations on driving simulation including lower limb contributions, muscle fatigue during heavy traffic situation, various biomechanics analysis in sports ie. badminton, bowling, rugby, table tennis, sepak takraw, and also researches on shoulder injury analysis and prevention. Currently she is collaborating with OGAWA and GOODNITE to investigate the effectiveness of massage chairs on multiple disorders and on sleep study and different mattress specifications. Due to her expertise she has been invited as keynote and invited speakers as well as forum panels at international and local conferences and as experts in various media platforms. She has completed supervision of 4 PhD and 7 Masters students, and currently supervising 4 PhD and 5 Masters candidates.
show more »Chua Yan Piaw is a professor at the Department of Mathematics and Science Education at the University of Malaya. In 2019, he was a visiting professor at the School of Social Work and Education, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK, and in 2014, he was a visiting professor at the Department of Sociology, University of Washington, Seattle, USA. His series of books, "Research Methods and Statistics", books 1 to 5 with 62 chapters, are among McGraw Hill's Top 10 Bestselling Titles in Malaysia. In addition, his book "Mastering Research Methods, 2nd Edition" was awarded the 2018 Book Publication Award by the University of Malaya. As a result of his contributions to reviewing articles for the Elsevier's Web-of-Science journal Computers in Human Behavior, he received the 2016 “Excellent Reviewer Award”, and the 2017 to 2019 "Outstanding in Reviewing" award from Elsevier. His inventions and innovations have won six gold medals at international invention and innovation expos, as well as five gold medals at the world peace painting and calligraphy exhibitions. He has been an invited speaker for more than a hundred AMOS, SPSS, and SmartPLS workshops. In 2015 to 2017, he was invited by the Institute of Graduate Studies, University of Malaya to conduct 38 workshops (14 hours each) for postgraduate students at the university to enhance their data analysis skills under the upskill program. Between 2015 and 2016, he was invited by the National Sports Institute of Malaysia to conduct 12 statistics workshops for bio-mechanists, nutritionists, and psychologists at the institute to enhance their data analysis skills.The number of PhD students graduated under his supervision between 2008-2018 is 22.
show more »As a highly accomplished computer scientist and data mining expert with over 35 years of experience, I have demonstrated exceptional leadership, expertise, and vision in the field. Over the course of my career, I have achieved numerous successes and made significant contributions to the industry. I began as an entry-level computer programmer in 1988 and advanced to become a Professor of Data Mining at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Malaya. I obtained my tertiary academic qualifications from Oklahoma City University and the University of Malaya, and I have published more than 90 academic papers in top-tier journals, including Information Fusion and the International Journal of Information Management. I have a remarkable H-index and number of citations in Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholars databases, and I have supervised numerous students at all levels of study. My areas of research include data warehouse, data mining, deep learning, IoT, activity recognition, wearable sensors, accelerometers, heart arrhythmia, electrocardiograph, supraventricular premature beat, multivariate time series, edge computing, task scheduling, data streams, mobile computing, speaker verification, language recognition, clustering algorithms, MapReduce, stock market, and sentiment analysis. I have received several grants of more than RM one million, including public, international, and private grants, and I have completed two commercial data science projects for Petronas GTD and Air Liquide. I serve as an Associate Editor for Human-Media Interaction - Frontiers in Psychology and a reviewer for several high-quality journals. I am also an Expert Advisory Panel for Master of Science (Data Science) Degree Program at UTP, Programme Advisory Panel for Bachelor of Business (Honors) in Business Analytics at TARUC, and an external assessor of Swinburne University of Technology (BS of Computer Science program). Additionally, I am an External Assessor for Programme Master Sciences (Computer and Information Engineering), IIUM, and a technical assessor of Swiss National Science Foundation. I have been teaching data mining since 2002, and have produced many highly qualified data scientists and Ph.D. graduates who have gone on to work for top companies like IBM, Amazon Web Services, and Google. As a highly respected and accomplished computer scientist, I have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the industry, and I am confident that my expertise, leadership, and vision make me a highly qualified computer scientist.
