Dr. Sook Mei Khor holds a B.Sc. degree (Hons) from the University of Malaysia (UKM) in Applied Chemistry (2002). She moved on with her M.Sc. studies at UKM under Prof. Dr. Yook Heng Lee and Prof. Dato' Dr. Musa Ahmad's supervision (2002-2004). Since completing her M.Sc. research, she served as an R&D chemist for two years before being assigned to the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, UM (2006-2008) as a science officer. She moved to Sydney, Australia, in 2008 to pursue her Ph.D. after acquiring some work experience in the industry under a Malaysian government scholarship (UM SLAI research fellowship). She received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia (2008–2011) under the guidance of Scientia Prof. Dr. John Justin Gooding (a great researcher, also a kind and awesome supervisor). She works in the field of electrochemistry, focusing on enzyme/affinity biosensors and the modification of the electrode surface. She currently leads a research group focused on the boundaries of analytical chemistry, analytical biochemistry, food safety and risk assessment, and electroanalytical chemistry, designing various types of (bio)sensors for analytical applications.

His academic journey has been an exciting one, starting with a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology with a specialization in Chemistry, followed by a remarkable Doctor of Philosophy from the prestigious University of Queensland, Australia. Till today, he had the privilege of immersing himself in diverse research cultures at six renowned institutes across Australia, Malaysia, and the United States. During his research endeavors, he had the pleasure of receiving specialized training on state-of-the-art equipment, including automatic peptide synthesizers (CSBio, Symphony X), NMR (Bruker), and MALDI-MS (Agilent, Shimadzu). These experiences were complemented by the invaluable guidance of exceptional researchers in modern peptide chemistry. Their expertise spans fascinating areas such as cyclotide synthesis, tarantula toxin, plant defensins, protease inhibitors, and conotoxins. His journey led him to the esteemed halls of Harvard University, where he honed his skills as a Nanotoxicology expert, delving into aerosol research under the mentorship of Professor Joseph Brain and Dr. Ramon Molina. Currently, his research focus revolves around the intriguing world of computational design, synthesis, and characterization of peptide antivirals and vaccines. Additionally, he is passionately involved in developing peptide-based carriers for peptide-based drugs (e.g. cancer), and biopesticides delivery. Beyond the laboratory, he finds great fulfillment in his role as a teacher and researcher, guiding and supporting four Ph.D. and two MSc students on their academic quests. To foster a collaborative environment, he warmly welcomes anyone with a zeal for furthering their studies or engaging in knowledge sharing and collaboration. Together, they can make significant strides in the fascinating realm of peptide chemistry and its applications.----------- TLDR ------------ Background/Experience: Certified chemist under Malaysia Chemist Act 1975. Holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland, Australia. Trained in modern peptide chemistry and Nanotoxicology at esteemed institutes. Instruments: Proficient with advanced equipment, including peptide synthesizers, NMR, MALDI-MS, ZetaSizer Nano, Vibrotome. Current Research: Focuses on designing peptide antivirals and vaccines and carriers for drugs and biopesticides. Currently mentors four Ph.D. and two MSc research students.
