LING Tau Chuan is a Professor at the Universiti Malaya. Tau Chuan graduated from the Universiti Putra Malaysia with a Degree in Biotechnology and stayed on to undertake Master Environmental Engineering study. He then completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham, UK with Prof Andrew Lyddiatt looking into development of cost-effective proteins downstream processing techniques. Following graduation in 2002, Tau Chuan joined the Universiti Putra Malaysia as a lecturer. Since joining the Universiti Malaya, Tau Chuan has established an internationally recognised research activity in proteins downstream processing and bioprocess engineering, funded by Government of Malaysia and industries. Tau Chuan is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Chartered Engineer. He is listed in the UM Researchers Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University and was awarded the Young Asian Biotechnologist Prize 2017 from The Society for Biotechnology, Japan. He has served as a visiting professor for several universities including Nanjing Agricultural University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, Lund University, National Cheng Kung University, Canterbury University and Kobe University. Tau Chuan’s expertise is in bioseparation technology and bioprocess intensification. He is internationally recognised for innovative work on the development of new and/or improved bioprocess separation and analytical techniques. He is especially well known for his work on primary capture technology, notably for inventing the technique known as aqueous two-phase systems and continuing the advancement of this and other separation techniques for large-scale application in the biopharmaceutical and nutriceutical sectors, and for his contributions to the advancement of adsorbent design and Fluidised Bed Adsorption technology. His current research mainly focuses on bioseparation, bioprocessing, green chemistry, and bioprospecting of microorganisms for useful biomolecules.
show more »Ling Tek Soon is a senior lecturer at the Institute of China Studies, University of Malaya. Apart from teaching, he is currently working on a UMRG project in University of Malaya, entitle “Abode of Dead, Depository of Knowledge and Contested Realm: A Study of Chinese Cemeteries in Malaysia”. Ling Tek Soon received his BA (Chinese Studies) and MA (East Asian Studies) from University of Malaya in 1997 and 2002.His thesis was titled “The Fundamental Ideologies of Deng Xiao Ping Conceming Reformation and Renewal since 1978" (Idea-idea Asas Deng Xiaoping terhadap Dasar Reformasi danPembukaan sejak tahun 1978). He was a tutor in the East Asian Studies Department, University of Malaya from 1998 to 2000 while working jointly as a n executive editor in The "Rosa Sintesis" Journal published by Centre of Malaysian Chinese Studies. In year 2001, he worked as a Mandarin Lecturer in UiTM, Pahang. Subsequently, he went on to pursue a Ph.D at Tsinghua University, Beijing in 2007. He received a doctorate degree in 2011 with a thesis titled “The Political Idea of Yangdu”. In the same year, he was appointed as a lecturer in Institute of China Studies, University of Malaya.
show more »Dr Shamshul Bahri received his PhD from Brunel University, London, his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from University of Malaya, and his Bachelor of Business Adminstration (BBA) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi. Before joining University of Malaya in 2000, he worked as an officer at the New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd, Jalan Riong Bangsar. There, he assisted the Central Region Circulation Manager in coordinating the Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, and Kelang circulation offices. He lead the Department of Operations and Management Information Systems, Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya in two stints: 2011 to 2014 and 2018-2019. His speciality is in the area of information systems (IS), especially IS implementation, payment systems, healthcare information systems, and social media. His current research interests lie in the area of finance technology (Fintech) and big data analytics. He was a Visiting Fellow at the School of Information Systems and Technology Management, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia in 2014 and a Visiting Professor at Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, Indonesia, in 2020. As an academic, Dr Shamshul had scored many firsts. He was the first academic from Malaysia's public universities to co-chair the program committee of the Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS). It happened in the conference's 21st edition (2017) held in Langkawi Island, Malaysia. He was also the first from Malaysia's public universities to be selected as an associate editor (the Human Behavior and IS Track) at the premier International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) when it was held in 2014 in Auckland, New Zealand. He was also the first from Malaysian universities to get the outputs from his joint-research with colleagues from UNSW and NUS, published in the Information Systems Journal (ISJ) and European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS). The two journals are listed in the "IS senior scholars' basket of eight" publications considered to be the most prestigious in the field of information systems. He is also currently a senior editor for the Pacific Asia Journal of Information Systems (PAJAIS) and an editorial member for the International Journal of Computer Theory and Engineering. In recognition of his contribution to the Association for the Information Systems (AIS) and to the field, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, he was recently awarded by the Association for Information Systems (AIS) the title of "Distinguished Member of the AIS", the first, and currently the only academic from Malaysian universities to receive the honour. Although less athletic, Dr Shamshul likes to play tennis. His hobbies include reading and singing.
