Rizal was part of the very first batch of Sport Science students that graduated from University of Malaya in 1999. In year 2000, he went on to pursue an MSc (Human Movement) at the University of Western Australia, graduated the following year and started to teach in UM in 2001. He formally completed his Phd from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Malaya in 2012; investigating the critical parameters of the ten-pin bowling delivery. Rizal’s primary focus is in on technical performance enhancement of various sport skills. More recent research include studying the reliability of the taekwondo scoring system, designing an apparatus to help the visually impaired exercise and; looking at the effects of leg length discrepancies on gait. He has also done work related in anthropometry and talent identification. Moreover, Rizal has a particularly keen interest in investigating and finding solutions for applied problems in an array of different fields. He was the Deputy Director of Undergraduate Studies & Development at the Centre for Sport & Exercise Sciences, UM from 2016 to 2019. He has also lead the transformation of UM sports facilities, which has seen a near ten fold increase in fixed monthly income in the last two years. At the same time he was instrumental in establishing the UM Sports Science Support Services (UM4S) which is the current commercial arm of the sports science labs. On the sporting side, Rizal is an accomplished floorball and hockey player that played at all age group levels for KL hockey up to national junior’s team. Now an active coach, recently winning the 2018 National U14 gold with the KL ladies hockey team. The highlight of his coaching career thus far is being the assistant coach for the national mens hockey team in 2008/09. He was also the coach cum player for the Malaysian Floorball Team and won a bronze medal at the 2015, 2019 & 2023 SEA Games, and currently serves as the president of the Malaysian Floorball Association.
show more »Assoc. Prof. Dr Nor Fadhilah Mohamad is an ophthalmologist sub-specialising in neuro-ophthalmology and has a strong background in clinical practice and education. She completed her fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) in London in 2012, where she gained expertise in managing complex neuro-ophthalmological conditions. Dr. Nor Fadhilah is the Postgraduate Programme Coordinator at the Department of Ophthalmology. In this role, she oversees the training and development of postgraduate students, ensuring that the programme supports academic and clinical excellence. She is also involved in shaping ophthalmology training in Malaysia, contributing to advancing education and professional standards in the field. Her clinical and academic interests include optic neuropathies and improving patient-centred approaches to care. Dr. Nor Fadhilah has shared her work at various conferences, reflecting her dedication to advancing knowledge and improving clinical practices. Committed to mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists, Dr. Nor Fadhilah focuses on fostering a supportive learning environment for her students and peers, encouraging professional growth and lifelong learning.
show more »Prof. Kwan serves as the Senior Orthopaedic Consultant of the Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, and the President of the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS) 2023/2025. He was the Past President of the Malaysia Spine Society (MSS) 2019/21. His practice is mainly devoted to spinal deformity, i.e., scoliosis patients. He has vast experience in taking care of and treating scoliosis patients via non-operative management, as well as operative management. He operates an average of 300 spine cases a year, with approximately 200 cases of scoliosis cases. Prof. Kwan is an active member of numerous international professional spine societies. He is well-known internationally, as well as in the regional spine community, where he currently serves as the President of the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS). He is also an Active Member of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and AOSpine. He has published more than 100 articles in the International/National Scientific Peer-Reviewed Journals. He was awarded many prestigious MOA research awards, namely the ‘P. Balasubramaniam Award 2014 and 2015’ for the best basic sciences research published papers for 2 consecutive years. He was later awarded the “Subir Sengupta Award in 2017 and 2018” for the best clinical research published papers for another 2 consecutive years. Due to his vast academic contributions, he was appointed as a member of various editorial board members and reviewers for many notable journals. He has written many academic books and videos related to orthopaedic and spinal surgery and has also contributed book chapters about spinal disorders. Due to his dedicated teaching, he was conferred the ‘Best Lecturer (Clinical) Award by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in the year 2013’.
