Selvajothi Ramalingam is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FLL), Universiti Malaya. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociolinguistics in 2018, a Master of Modern Languages Studies in 2010, and a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences in 2001 from Universiti Malaya. He also holds a Diploma in Teaching (Secondary School – Tamil Language) from Tuanku Bainun Teachers’ Training College (2002) and a Diploma in Translation jointly awarded by the Malaysian Translation Association and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (2014). His doctoral research focused on language shift and maintenance among the Tamil community in Kuching, Sarawak. His research interests include sociolinguistics, mother tongue education, indigenous studies, translation studies, and language use in job interviews. He has contributed as a writer for the Form Three and Form Five Tamil Language textbooks, currently used by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Malaysia. He serves as an External Examiner for the the Tamil Language Degree Programme at the Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education (Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia) under the MoE. He is also a Council Member of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka for Multi-ethnic Affairs (Malay language and literature) and previously served as a Committee Member for the Semai Language Research Project conducted by the Curriculum Development Division, Ministry of Education. In addition, he is a Panel Member of the Malaysian Indian Research Centre, Department of Indian Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. Since 2025, he has been appointed as a Panel Member of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Currently, he serves as the Coordinator of the Bachelor of Tamil Language and Linguistics Degree Programme and is also the Chief Auditor of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. |
