Selvajothi Ramalingam is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FLL), Universiti Malaya. He holds a PhD in Sociolinguistics (2018), a Master of Modern Languages Studies (2010), and a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (2001) from Universiti Malaya. He also obtained a Diploma in Teaching (Secondary School – Tamil Language) from Tuanku Bainun Teachers’ Training College in 2002 and a Diploma in Translation jointly awarded by the Malaysian Translation Association and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 2014. His doctoral research examined language shift and maintenance among the Tamil community in Kuching, Sarawak. His research interests include sociolinguistics, mother tongue education, indigenous studies, translation studies, and language use in job interviews. He has served as a writer for the Form Three and Form Five Tamil Language textbooks currently used by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. Selvajothi is an External Examiner for the Curriculum Review of the Tamil Language Degree Programme at the Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education. He is also a Council Member of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka for Multi-ethnic Affairs. He has been appointed as a Panel Member of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) since 2025.
