Associate Professor Dr. Phan Chia Wei is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Life Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. His interdisciplinary research spans pharmaceutical microbiology, medicinal mushrooms, natural products, functional foods, neuroscience, precision medicine, and translational health.

His research focuses on the discovery and development of bioactive compounds from natural sources, particularly medicinal mushrooms, for applications in healthy ageing, neuroprotection, immunomodulation, cardiovascular health, and metabolic diseases. His work integrates molecular and cellular biology, pharmacology, functional food development, and clinical translation, while also extending into health research ethics and clinical trial methodology to facilitate responsible innovation in healthcare.

To date, Dr. Phan has secured and participated in research grants exceeding RM1 million from national, international, industry, and community engagement funding agencies. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and book chapters, and serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms. His research has resulted in several patents and intellectual property filings and has fostered collaborations with academic institutions, healthcare organisations, and industry partners across Malaysia and internationally.

Dr. Phan has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to research, teaching, and academic leadership, including the Universiti Malaya Best Senior Lecturer (Science Category) Award (2025) and the Universiti Malaya Excellent Service Award (2024). He is also a recipient of prestigious international fellowships and appointments, including the Nanjing University International Fellowship Initiative (Young Scholar), the Global Immersion Program Visiting Scholar at Southwest University, China, and Distinguished Foreign Expert with the Biotechnology and Nuclear Technology Research Institution, Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China.

Beyond research, Dr. Phan is actively involved in academic leadership and postgraduate education. Since 2025, he has served as the PhD Programme Coordinator and Year 1 Coordinator of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) Programme at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UM. He previously served as the Director of the Clinical Investigation Centre (CIC), Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (2019–2024), where he played a key role in strengthening clinical research infrastructure, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training, and clinical trial capacity.

At the national level, Dr. Phan currently serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Young Scientists Network–Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN–ASM) and is a Member of the Royal Society of Biology (MRSB). Through these roles, he actively promotes scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, research integrity, and science communication among early- and mid-career researchers.

Driven by a passion for mentorship and innovation, Dr. Phan has supervised numerous postgraduate and undergraduate research projects and continues to collaborate extensively with researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and policymakers. His vision is to bridge fundamental science, translational research, and precision healthcare to develop impactful, sustainable solutions that improve patient outcomes and public health.
