Dr. Muhamad Nasir Mohamad Salleh is a Senior Lecturer in the Islamic Education Programme at the Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya. He holds a PhD in Islamic Education from Universiti Malaya, where he completed his doctoral studies with the Graduate on Time (GOT) recognition. He also holds a Master of Islamic Studies and a Bachelor’s degree in Shariah, specialising in Fiqh and Usul, from Universiti Malaya. His areas of expertise include Islamic education pedagogy, Qur’anic education, and research in Qur’anic education.
His research focuses particularly on the teaching and learning of the Qur’an, Qur’anic recitation and tarannum, pedagogical innovation, and the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence into Qur’anic and Islamic education. He has led and participated in a range of university- and externally funded research projects, including projects on interactive multimedia modules for Qur’anic recitation and memorisation, the integration of artificial intelligence into Qur’anic learning for Islamic education teacher trainees, the development of a tarannum teaching module at Darul Quran JAKIM, and the development of a sustainable model for state Islamic secondary schools in Sabah. His scholarly work has also extended to Islamic education pedagogy, teacher education, and the development of educational models and instructional resources.
Alongside his academic career, Dr. Muhamad Nasir has extensive experience in Qur’anic education and recitation. He served as an invited lecturer for tarannum al-Qur’an courses at Darul Quran JAKIM and has contributed to the development of Qur’anic recitation standards, guidelines, and instructional materials for educational institutions in Malaysia. He has also served as an imam at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur and has held accreditation to teach in mosques under the Islamic religious authority of Selangor. His engagement with Qur’anic education therefore combines academic research and pedagogy with sustained practical experience in Qur’anic recitation and instruction.
His scholarly and professional contributions include academic publications, books, book chapters, educational guidelines, Qur’anic learning resources, and research-based instructional materials. Among his publications are works on interactive self-directed tarannum learning and innovation in the teaching and learning of tarannum al-Qur’an. He has also contributed a chapter published by Springer on challenges in Islamic education during the pandemic.
Dr. Muhamad Nasir has received a number of recognitions for his academic, research, innovation, and Qur’anic achievements. These include a Gold Award at Universiti Malaysia Sabah in 2025, the Best Poster Award and Audience Choice Award at the International Poster Competition 2024, and the Graduate on Time recognition for his doctoral research. His achievements in Qur’anic recitation include winning national-level Qur’anic recitation competitions among Malaysian higher education institutions, representing his expertise at the ASEAN level, and being a finalist in Akademi al-Quran, a Malaysian television programme dedicated to Qur’anic recitation.
Through his teaching, research, publications, educational innovation, and professional engagement, Dr. Muhamad Nasir continues to advance the field of Qur’anic education, with particular emphasis on strengthening Qur’anic pedagogy and exploring meaningful applications of emerging technologies in the teaching and learning of the Qur’an.
