ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. AHMAD FARID BIN ABU BAKAR

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Farid received a PhD in Environmental Geology, MSc and BSc in Applied Geology from Universiti Malaya. He is a certified Professional Geologist (P.Geol.) with the Board of Geologists Malaysia. He is an active member of Institute of Geology Malaysia and a member of Geological Society of Malaysia. Dr. Ahmad Farid teaches undergraduate courses in Geology and Environmental Geology, as well as supervise postgraduate MSc and Phd students. He is a coordinator for Industrial Relation and Attachment, Alumni and Community Engagement (SULAM) Course in Department of Geology, UM. His current research interests are focused on environmental impact of REE extraction, Hydrogeology and water flow in porous earth material, carbon capture using geological materials and metals pollution assessment & remediation in hydrosphere and pedosphere. He has authored over 24 publications in Web of Science Index-journals, received more than 500 citations with H-index of 12. Dr Ahmad Farid and his team is in close collaboration with local and international researchers, who share a common aim of translating new knowledge into scientific application and applied geological practice. He is also a recipient of awards such as the EAGER award from Coordinating Committee For Geoscience Programmes In East And Southeast Asia (CCOP) and Excellence Service Award from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

PROF. DR. CHRIS CHAN YIN WEI

In 2008, Professor Dr. Chris graduated from Masters of Orthopaedic Surgery training in University Malaya at the top of the class and was awarded the ‘N. Subramaniam Award’. At the same time, his research project on ‘safety in thoracic pedicle screw’ during his training, under the supervision of Prof Dato’ Dr. Kwan Mun Keong won the ‘Mahmood Merican award’ for top research project among all Masters of Orthopaedic trainee in 2008. The research project was subsequently published in 2 international journals, European Spine Journal and Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy. His research interest is mainly in idiopathic scoliosis with more than 50 publications to date in tier 1 spine journals such as Spine, The Spine Journal and European Spine Journal. His most recent notable publications were on the subjects of dual attending surgeons to increase the safety in scoliosis surgery, accelerated recovery protocol for scoliosis surgery and safety of pedicle screws in scoliosis surgery. His publications have won the “Subir Sengupta Best Published Clinical Award 2017 and 2018” and the “P. Balasubramaniam Best Published Basic Science Award”. He is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society and is the Fellowship Chairperson for the Asia Pacific Spine Society. He is also in the editorial board for the Asian Spine Journal and is the spine manuscript editor for the Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal. He is also a Committee Member of the Malaysian Spine Society.

PROF. DR. ZURINA BINTI OSMAN

Professor Dr. Zurina Osman is a distinguished researcher in the field of energy materials, specializing in polymer electrolytes and electrode materials for electrochemical devices such as batteries, solar cells, and supercapacitors. She completed her PhD at Universiti Malaya in 2003, marking the beginning of a prolific academic career. After earning her doctorate, she joined the Physics Department at the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya as a lecturer. Her dedication to research and teaching led to her promotion to associate professor in 2008, and later to full professor in 2018. Her academic journey is marked by a steadfast commitment to advancing the field of energy materials, which has been recognized both nationally and internationally. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, Professor Dr. Zurina Osman has held several key administrative roles. She served as the Head of the Department of Physics from 2019 to 2021, where she played a pivotal role in steering the department's academic and research activities. Since 2018, she has been leading the Centre for Ionics Universiti Malaya (C.I.U.M), where she continues to push the boundaries of research in ionics and related fields. Professor Zurina's research has resulted in over 100 publications in high-ranked journals, garnering more than 1600 citations, and H-index of 20, reflecting the significant impact of her work on the scientific community. She has also presented her research at numerous international conferences, sharing her insights with the global scientific community. Her mentorship has guided more than 30 postgraduate students, many of whom have gone on to make their own contributions to the field. Her innovative work has been recognized through various awards at prestigious innovation exhibitions, including ITEX and MTE, highlighting her contributions to applied research and technology development.
