Ir. Dr. Khairunnisa Hasikin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaya. She obtained her Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering and Master of Engineering Science in Biomedical Engineering from Universiti Malaya, and later completed her PhD at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Her research expertise lies in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, computer vision, and medical image analysis, with a strong focus on healthcare applications. She is widely recognised for her work in AI-driven malaria diagnosis, leading the development of MalariaCare+, an end-to-end intelligent system for automated malaria detection, species identification, blood-stage classification, and clinical decision support. Her research aims to translate advanced AI technologies into practical healthcare solutions that improve diagnostic accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility.
Her research extends beyond healthcare to incorporate environmental sustainability and intelligent decision-support systems, such as artificial intelligence applications for air quality forecasting, pollutant source identification, carbon neutrality initiatives, and sustainable development.
Dr. Khairunnisa is the Executive Director of the Strategic & Student Residential Ecosystem Department (JSEPP) at Universiti Malaya. In this capacity, she is responsible for the strategic development of student accommodation, residential facilities, transportation services, and the overall student affairs ecosystem. She has a wealth of experience in student leadership, welfare, residential governance, and community engagement, having served as the Principal of Bestari Residential College (KK4) and Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College (KK12). She is committed to fostering innovation and generating significant impact in both higher education and society through her academic, research, and administrative responsibilities
