Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman is the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Malaysia’s premier university, and a world-renowned scholar, engineer, inventor and institutional leader in biomechanical, bioengineering and human-centred technological innovation. His career represents the rare convergence of academic excellence, engineering distinction, translational research, entrepreneurial impact, national service and global higher education leadership.
Educated in the United Kingdom at the University of Bradford and the University of Strathclyde, Professor Noor Azuan has built an exceptional professional profile grounded in international academic training and engineering excellence. He holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours from Bradford, as well as Master’s and PhD qualifications from Strathclyde University. He is a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia, a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, a Chartered Professional Engineer in Australia, and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
As Professor of Biomechanics at Universiti Malaya, his scientific work has advanced the frontiers of prosthetics, orthotics, orthopaedic implants, rehabilitation engineering and precise human-movement analysis. His research is not confined to laboratories or publications alone; it has been translated into technologies, clinical applications and innovations that improve mobility, restore dignity and transform lives. His contributions have earned major international recognition, including the BLESMA Award in the United Kingdom and the Forchheimer Prize in Belgium, recognised among the most prestigious honours in the field of biomechanics.
His academic record reflects both depth and impact. He has produced 297 indexed publications via Web of Science and Scopus, achieved an H-index of 46, authored four academic books, secured more than RM20 million in research grants, and supervised 41 Master’s and 45 PhD graduates to completion, with further Master’s and PhD candidates under active supervision. He also holds 14 patents, including 12 local patents and two international patents, reflecting a career that bridges scholarly excellence with real-world innovation.
Professor Noor Azuan’s work has been recognised at the highest national level. He received Malaysia’s prestigious National Academic Award twice, conferred by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. In 2025, he was conferred the Honorary Doctor of Engineering title by the University of Bradford, his alma mater, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to engineering, science, innovation and society.
Beyond research, Professor Noor Azuan is an institution builder. During his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Universiti Malaya, he led a major transformation that strengthened the Faculty’s academic performance and positioned it among the world’s leading engineering faculties, including Top 10 recognition in Engineering by U.S. News and Top 35 by QS. He established the engineering@UM Industrial Innovation Centre, valued at RM300 million, the first of its kind in the region, and founded BioApps Sdn. Bhd., a Universiti Malaya spin-off company that generated more than RM25million in revenue from 2015 to December 2025.
His leadership journey spans several major academic and executive roles across Malaysian higher education. Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya on 6 November 2023, he served as Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) from 8 June 2022 to 5 November 2023. He also served as Acting Registrar of Universiti Malaya, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, and Acting Vice-Chancellor of UMT on two occasions. Earlier in his career at Universiti Malaya, he held several key leadership posts, including Dean, Deputy Dean of Development, Deputy Dean of Academic, and Head of Department.
At UNITEN, he contributed to strengthening the university’s position as a leading energy-focused institution in the region and worked on the establishment of the National Energy Centre to advance Malaysia’s energy transition agenda. This reflects his broader leadership philosophy: that universities must not only respond to national priorities, but help shape them with foresight, science, innovation and institutional courage.
Professor Noor Azuan also plays major roles in national, regional and global academic governance. He serves on the Executive Council of the World Council of Biomechanics and as a Council Member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the ASEAN University Network. In Malaysia, he serves on the Board of Trustees of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and on the Board of Directors of the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
He also chairs the METEOR Group company, has served as President of the Malaysia Society of Biomechanics since 2011, and represents Malaysia as Councilor in the World Council of Biomechanics until present. He is an Executive Committee Member of the Asian Pacific Association of Biomechanics, Director of the Centre for Applied Biomechanics at Universiti Malaya, Director and Founder of BioApps Sdn. Bhd., Deputy Director of MSMBE, and Technical Advisor for KTM-MARA. He was a Board Member of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College for three years.
His global academic presence is equally extensive. He has served as a visiting professor at several top-notch universities in China. He has also served as external examiner and assessor for institutions in Brunei, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Qatar and the United Kingdom.
A highly sought-after speaker, Professor Noor Azuan has delivered more than 50 keynote, plenary and invited talks at international conferences, symposiums and workshops across the world, particularly in prosthetics technologies, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering and biomechanics. His international networks span leading universities and research institutions, including the University of Strathclyde, the University of Calgary, the University of Melbourne, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and other world-class centres of excellence.
He has also received recognition beyond academia, including the Asia HRD Congress Award for Contributions to Society. This reflects a career defined not merely by scientific achievement, but by social purpose — the belief that engineering, research and innovation must serve people, communities and humanity.
As Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Professor Noor Azuan now leads the nation’s foremost university at a time of profound global uncertainty, technological disruption and shifting higher education demands. His leadership is anchored in excellence with conscience, innovation with humanity, and ambition with national purpose. He brings to Universiti Malaya a rare blend of scientific credibility, institutional reform experience, global networks, entrepreneurial success and deep commitment to public good.
His vision for Universiti Malaya is clear: to build a university that does not merely compete in rankings, but leads with values; a university that does not merely produce graduates, but shapes future leaders; a university that does not merely generate knowledge, but transforms lives, strengthens humanity and contributes meaningfully to the world.
Under his stewardship, Universiti Malaya is positioned not only as Malaysia’s oldest and most prestigious university, but as a bold, future-facing, globally connected institution — one that carries the courage to lead, the conscience to serve, and the capacity to build a better future for Malaysia and humanity.
