DR. LAI LEE LEE

Dr Lai Lee Lee, BNurSc (Hons) (Major Teaching), MMedSci (Anesthesiology) and PhD MedSci (Medicine) Dr Lai is a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaya and Clinical Researcher in Oncoplastic Breast Unit at Universiti Malaya Medical Center (UMMC). She is actively involved in different areas of clinical research at Universiti Malaya. Her area of interest is mainly in Clinical Breast Surgical Oncology such as new techniques such as minimally invasive breast surgeries (endoscopic), ERAS in Breast Reconstruction, and developing Decision Aid in Breast Reconstruction. Apart from this, she is very active in clinical trials such as breast cancer oncological treatments such as few clinical trials such as the risk for breast cancer, Intraoperative Radiotherapy (TARGIT B Trial), improving outcomes for breast-conserving surgery and oncology treatment for breast cancer, Biomarkers research for breast cancers, Epidemiology research, Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) and Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) research.

ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. MUHAMMAD FAZRIL BIN MOHAMAD RAZIF

Dr. Muhammad Fazril Razif became a member of the Department of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine in 2014. He completed his undergraduate education at Murdoch University (Perth, Australia) in 2007 with a double degree in BSc (Biomedical Science/Molecular Biology) and BSc (Forensic Biology and Toxicology; Minor in Criminology). In 2009, he joined the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research to pursue his PhD research. After four years, he received his PhD from the School of Medicine and Pharmacology (University of Western Australia, Australia), with his project entitled “RNA-binding Proteins: Unraveling the code”. During his candidature, Dr. Fazril was shortlisted as a state-finalist for the AusBiotech-GSK Student Excellence Awards (2011) for his work. Dr. Fazril has worked on numerous research projects, including the expression and validation of synthetic proteins, genomics and transcriptomics studies on acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, diabetes and schizophrenia. In 2017, he joined the Medicinal Mushroom Research Group (MMRG) and has great interest in studying the genome, transcriptome and proteome of medicinal mushrooms. His current research also focuses on the expression of novel proteins found in medicinal mushrooms and their bioactivities via pre-clinical and clinical studies. Academically, he has spearheaded the development of three new courses in the Department. These are GIM2001 Body and Your Health; MIX3001 Techniques in Molecular Medicine and GDM0006 Global Trends in Food and Health. He is also an active Faculty member, with positions as the Deputy Head (Research & Publication) in the Visibility, Information and Communication (VICFOM) Unit, member of the Internal Audit team under the Quality Management System (QMS) Committee, and member of the Occupational Safety and Health Committee (OSHE).  As a Principal Investigator, he has supervised 4 PhD and 2 MSc students, and is currently supervising 3 PhD and 1 MSc candidates . He has also published 3 Book chapters and 20 research articles, and have received a total of 8 research grants (3 as Principal Investigator). In 2017, he was awarded with “The Highest Number of Publications in the Department” award. In 2021, he was nominated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) to represent Universiti Malaya at the National Young Scientist Award 2021, Academy of Sciences Malaysia. At present, he is an Editorial Board member of two journals and is an Executive Committee member of the Malaysian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB).

ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. PETER ANING ANAK TEDONG

Associate Professor Dr. Peter Aning Tedong joined the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Malaya in December 2014. He is currently the Head of Department of Urban and Regional Planning and was formerly the Head of the Centre for Malaysian Indigenous Studies. As an urban studies and housing scholar, Dr. Peter Aning’s broad areas of interest cover housing policy and governance, the political economy of urban planning, and neighborhood sustainability and planning. He has received numerous research grants from both the public and private sectors and has led several high-impact national and international projects. Notably, he served as Project Leader for the Family Wellbeing Index funded by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), with findings published in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). He is also the Project Leader for a study on poverty alleviation funded by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Sarawak, and the Principal Investigator of a comparative study on informal housing in Makassar (Indonesia) and Sabah (Malaysia) funded by the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC). His recently completed projects explored socio-spatial planning in the context of Malaysia’s urban future and the dynamics of poverty among Indigenous communities in rural areas. He has also conducted extensive work on the role of governance in addressing the needs of vulnerable communities—including refugees, stateless persons, and foreign workers—while examining broader issues of housing and migration in Malaysian cities. His latest research interests center on multi-layered governance of affordable housing, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in relation to neighborhood and community planning, and the impacts of migration on regional and urban development. While his empirical focus is on Southeast Asia, Dr. Peter Aning has also conducted fieldwork in Europe, the Borneo Islands, North America, and Oceania.
