Dr. Muhammad Fazril Razif joined the Department of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, in 2014. He graduated from Murdoch University, Perth, Australia, in 2007, with two bachelor's degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science/Molecular Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Biology and Toxicology, with a minor in Criminology. In 2009, he commenced his doctoral research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and obtained his PhD from the School of Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Western Australia, Australia. His doctoral research, entitled “RNA-binding Proteins: Unraveling the Code,” explored the role of RNA-binding proteins in molecular biology. In recognition of his research contributions, he was shortlisted as a state finalist for the AusBiotech–GSK Student Excellence Awards in 2011.

Dr. Fazril has contributed to a diverse range of research projects, encompassing synthetic protein expression and validation, as well as genomic and transcriptomic investigations into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, diabetes, and schizophrenia. In 2017, he joined the Medicinal Mushroom Research Group (MMRG), where he developed a strong research focus on the integrated study of medicinal mushroom genomes, transcriptomes, and proteomes. His current research centres on the discovery and expression of novel proteins from medicinal mushrooms and the investigation of their biological activities through preclinical and clinical studies.

Beyond his research endeavours, Dr. Fazril has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic development and institutional leadership. He has spearheaded the development of three new elective courses within the Department and currently serves as its Risk Manager. He also leads the Visibility, Information and Communication Unit (VICFOM), contributing to the Faculty's strategic communication, visibility, and outreach initiatives. In addition, he serves on the Internal Audit Team under the Quality Management System (QMS) Committee and is a member of the UMQEI 2.0 Task Force.

As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Fazril has successfully supervised the graduation of four PhD and two MSc students and is currently supervising three PhD and one MSc candidates. His scholarly contributions include three book chapters and more than 30 research articles. He has secured eight research grants, including three as Principal Investigator, demonstrating his capacity to develop and lead research initiatives. In 2017, he received the Department's award for the Highest Number of Publications. In 2021, he was nominated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) to represent Universiti Malaya at the National Young Scientist Award, organised by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.

Dr. Fazril continues to contribute to the scientific community through his professional and editorial appointments. He serves as an Editorial Board Member of the Malaysian Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MJBMB) and as Honorary Treasurer of the Malaysian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB), supporting the advancement of biochemical and molecular biological research in Malaysia.
