Associate Professor Dr. Amirrudin Kamsin is a leading Malaysian academic and research innovator in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction, Educational Technology, and Islamic Digital Informatics, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Computer System & Technology at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaya. With over two decades of academic and institutional leadership, Dr. Amirrudin has played a transformative role in Malaysia’s digital innovation and higher education ecosystem. He has held multiple senior appointments including Acting Director of The Centre for Leadership and Professional Development (UMLEAD), Acting Director and Deputy Director at the Universiti Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCED), UMEXPERT Coordinator, and a key Taskforce Member of Universiti Malaya’s Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He holds a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from University College London, an MSc in Computer Animation from Bournemouth University, and a Bachelor of Information Technology from Universiti Malaya. With this multidisciplinary training, he leads impactful research that bridges technology, education, ethics, and socio-digital inclusion. As Principal Investigator and Co-Researcher, Dr. Amirrudin has secured over RM 3.6 million in research funding through national schemes such as FRGS and PRGS, as well as international initiatives including the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Newton-Ungku Omar Fund. His major research themes include: Game-Based Learning and AR Serious Games for STEM Education Quranic and Hadith Authentication Frameworks Digital Health and mHealth for Smoking Cessation and Oral Health Cultural Heritage Edutainment Platforms for Youth Tourism Accessibility Portals for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in ASEAN Dr. Amirrudin has supervised and mentored over 70 postgraduate students, including more than 50 PhD candidates across diverse specialisations such as AI in Education, Serious Games, Educational and Training Technology, and Islamic Informatics. He is also a frequent examiner and research advisor for postgraduate theses both in Malaysia and internationally. His scholarly output includes over 100 publications in high-impact SCIE and Scopus-indexed journals, such as IEEE Access, Computers & Education, Thinking Skills & Creativity, Information Processing & Management, and Digital Health. His current H-index is 20 in Publons and 23 in Scopus, with 1,668 citations (Publons) and 2,387 citations (Scopus) — reflecting the growing academic influence of his transdisciplinary research. His innovations have earned over 40 awards — including Special Award, Platinum, Double Gold, Gold, and Silver Medals — especially for transformative work in Islamic digital content validation and health gamification systems. He is also the inventor of a patented Quranic authentication system, granted by MyIPO (PI2021006589), and has registered multiple software copyrights from his digital research outputs. Dr. Amirrudin is actively involved in community outreach with schools, leading digital initiatives on educational gamification, Quranic content integrity, and STEM engagement for youth audiences. At the national level, he contributes to policy and capacity development as: A Panel Assessor and Grant Evaluator for the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) A Curriculum and Academic Program Assessor for public and private institutions A Panel Member of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) supporting national digital content, ethics, and talent development initiatives He is an active member of global academic and professional bodies including the IEEE Computer Society, Internet Society, IAENG, and the Alliance of Researchers on Moderation (ARM). He serves as keynote speaker, plenary panellist, and technical reviewer for numerous international conferences. Dr. Amirrudin continues to advance research that is globally competitive, locally impactful, ethically grounded, and aligned with national strategies such as Education 5.0, the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
