Dr. Woo is a consultant gynaecological oncologist with clinical and research experience that ranges from prevention to treatment of cervical cancer and hereditary/ familial gynaecological cancers. She undertook her research in HPV immune-biology in the University of Cambridge under the Cancer Research UK Gordon Hamilton Fairley Fellowship and was awarded a PhD degree in 2008. As a clinician, she was awarded the gold medal by the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist as the top ranked individual for the international examination. Having trained and worked in the UK, she returned to Malaysia in 2010 to take up a professorial post in the premier teaching hospital, University Malaya (UM). As a translational scientist, she has worked tirelessly to making this knowledge more accessible and applicable to the broader population through her advisory role on policy development nationally and internationally. She is also a recognized expert in HPV vaccination and is currently the country representative (Malaysia) for the Asia-Oceania Research Organisation in Genital Infection and Neoplasia (AOGIN), taskforce member for the Malaysian policy change to Primary HPV screening for cervical cancer, member of the Asia Pacific Economic Consortium (APEC) Cervical Cancer working group and is the founding principal investigator for Program ROSE (Removing Obstacles to cervical ScrEening, a revolutionary approach to cervical cancer screening. Program ROSE (www.programrose.org, @programROSE) that utilizes digital technology, self-sampling and HPV testing. The program was recently highlighted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (https://eiuperspectives.economist.com/healthcare/global-action-financing-cervical-cancer-elimination-funding-secondary-prevention-services-low). The program was a strong contender at the 2018 UICC Collaborative award, shortlisted among 2 other nominations globally, and has received many international accolades and praises. Program ROSE (www.programrose.org, @programROSE) utilizes digital technology, self-sampling and HPV testing to change the paradigm of conventional cervical screening, facilitating increased screening uptake for ALL woman. Dr Woo is also the founder of ROSE Foundation, a non-profit organisation, dedicated to making cervical cancer prevention accessible and affordable to the underprivileged. The success of Program ROSE is a testament to her incessant drive to make cervical cancer a rare disease in our lifetime. She also dedicates her time to working closely with other academic institutions, NGOS and also industry to educate, inform and advise on matters pertaining to control of HPV associated diseases. show more »Professor Dr. Yvonne Lim Ai Lian currently serves as the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) at Universiti Malaya. She holds the position of Senior Professor in the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, and is a member of the University Senate. A Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), she also co-chairs the Asia Pacific Women in Leadership Programme and is a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Throughout her career, Dr. Lim has held several prominent university and national leadership positions, including Deputy Dean (Research) at the Faculty of Medicine, Director of the International Relations Office, and Associate Vice-Chancellor of Global Engagement at Universiti Malaya. She also served as the President of the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine and as a Council Member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Her research focuses on unravelling the complex host-parasite-environment interactions that contribute to diseases among indigenous and underserved communities, aiming to develop multi-targeted solutions. Additionally, she studies the diversity of gut and skin microbiomes across communities spanning diverse socioeconomic and ecological gradients, ranging from traditional to industrialized societies. For nearly three decades, she has focused on studying infectious diseases among the Orang Asli (indigenous) communities of Peninsular Malaysia, collaborating closely with the Hospital Orang Asli Gombak. Her active involvement in shaping national policies, including contributing to the Orang Asli Development Policy (DPOA), underscores her deep commitment to community welfare. Her collaboration with New York University revealed how low levels of helminth (worm) infections promote the growth of probiotic gut microbiota, a groundbreaking discovery published in Science (2016). Her research on the gut microbiome has since expanded to include studies among HIV and cancer patients. More recently, her work in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA has delved deeper into parasitic infections and gut microbiome dynamics, as well as the association between skin infections and the skin microbiome. Dr. Lim’s work has been supported by a range of national and international grants, including the prestigious US NIH R01 grants. More recently, she was awarded another US NIH R01 grant as the principal investigator. She has published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific articles, contributed 9 book chapters, and authored 3 books. A dedicated mentor, she has supervised to completion more than 40 postgraduate students and hosted researchers through extensive collaborations spanning countries such as the US, UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. Dr. Lim has held visiting research and academic roles at prominent institutions, including the Scottish Parasite Diagnostic and Reference Laboratory (formerly Scottish Parasite Diagnostic Laboratory) in Glasgow, Scotland; the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne, Australia; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA; and the Department of Molecular Parasitology and Tropical Diseases at Taipei Medical University, Taiwan. Dr. Lim has received a host of accolades, including the MSPTM Medal (2008) for outstanding young scientists, the Universiti Malaya Excellent Lecturer Award for Science Disciplines (2015), and the Top Research Scientists of Malaysia Award (2016). In 2017, she was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Dr. Lim has also been featured in the Stanford University's list of the top 2% of scientists globally in her field for several consecutive years. In 2021, she was honoured with the Fulbright Scholar Award (2021/2022) for a fellowship at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at NIAID, NIH, USA. Most recently, she received the prestigious Sandosham Gold Medal Award in 2024, the highest distinction awarded by the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine, for her outstanding achievements in the fields of parasitology and tropical medicine. show more »Dr. Azimah Omar received her B.Eng. degree in Electrical & Electronics and M.Sc. in Electrical Power Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). 2017 she completed her Ph.D. in Electrical, Electronics & Systems Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering UM, and seconded to the Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) University of Malaya Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC). Her research interests include solar photovoltaic systems & technologies, nanomaterials & nanotechnology, solar cell modelling & optimization, and solar cell fabrication, characterization & analysis. She is also involved in solar PV module testing for industries using Electroluminescence equipment. In April 2025, the Electroluminescence Testing Lab successfully demonstrated its technical competence to operate in accordance with MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (ISO/IEC 17025:2017). She is also an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA, and a Graduate Engineer of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). In December 2024, she was appointed as a Counselor for the IEEE UM Student Branch, where the team will be organizing the SCOReD2025 conference in November 2025. In January 2020, she was selected to join the DAAD DIES ProGRANT Proposal Writing for Research Grants in Malaysia (Remote Seminar) organized by the University of Cologne, Germany. After completing three-section courses, she is officially in the DAAD DIES ProGRANT Alumni Community. In December 2024, in collaboration with Professor Takashi Sagawa (Kyoto University), their research work was selected to join the Leadership Exchange Course (FY2024, JST NEXUS program), sponsored by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and organized by Kyoto University, Japan. She recently had 674 total citations and a 12 h-index and 850 total citations, 15 h-index based on SCOPUS and Google, respectively. She is also an active and recognized Reviewer for the Journal of Materials Research, Heliyon Elsevier Journal, Nanotechnology Journal (IOP Publishing), and Materials Chemistry & Physics Elsevier Journal.
