Academic Links

Dr. Ong obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Universiti Malaya in 2013 and has been serving at UM since then. His expertise spans vibration analysis, modal analysis, rotor dynamics, virtual instrumentation, signal processing, predictive maintenance, fault diagnostics, artificial intelligence, and computational mechanics. With extensive industrial experience in machinery vibration projects since 2008, Dr. Ong has served as a Technical Consultant for several local companies, providing advanced machinery diagnostics, project planning, and management to ensure safe and efficient project execution. He is also a certified trainer and assessor for the Vibration Practitioner/Specialist Certification Program (ISO 18436) under the Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM). Dr. Ong is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) of the Engineering Council, UK, through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) since 2014. He is also a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) since 2016. In 2021, he was recognized as an ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE) under the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer Coordinating Committee (ACPECC). He has been an active member of the IMM Vibration and Young Professionals Committees since 2015, frequently sharing his expertise as a speaker at industry seminars and conferences. His academic contributions extend internationally, as he currently serves as a Visiting Research Professor at Bournemouth University, UK, until 2026. In 2026, he was appointed as Visiting Professor at Ningbo Polytechnic University, China until 2031. At Universiti Malaya, Dr. Ong is the Deputy Dean of Higher Degrees at the Faculty of Engineering, overseeing postgraduate studies affairs. Previously, he was the Deputy Director of the Centre for Research in Industry 4.0 (CRI), a strategic initiative bridging academia and industry in response to the government’s Industry 4.0 agenda. He also leads UMEngSHM, an interdisciplinary research group specializing in AI-driven predictive maintenance solutions, formed through the collaboration of the Structural Health Monitoring Research Group and the Advanced Shock and Vibration Research Group.
