Biography | |
Dr. Sarinder Kaur obtained her Bachelor of Computer Science (2000) and Master of Computer Science (2002) from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya (UM), and later completed her Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Science, UM, in 2007. She is currently an Associate Professor at the same faculty. Dr. Sarinder is actively engaged in teaching, research, supervision, publication, and academic administration. She has taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Introduction to Database Systems, Advanced Databases and Big Data, Programming in Bioinformatics, Data Analytics in Biology, and Algorithms and Tools in Bioinformatics. She is the Principal Investigator of the Data Science & Bioinformatics Laboratory at UM, which collaborates with both local and international institutions, including University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), UM Cancer Institute, Monash University Malaysia, the University of Cambridge (UK), and the University of Saskatchewan (Canada). Her primary research interests lie in managing, representing, and analyzing scientific data using computational tools—particularly in the areas of visual analytics, databases, and data science. Dr. Sarinder currently leads a project at UMMC focused on developing a Breast Cancer Digital Ecosystem, integrating clinical informatics solutions to improve workflow and data-driven decision-making in oncology. She is also collaborating with genome scientists from the University of Saskatchewan on a bioinformatics-based framework for identifying novel therapeutics for metastatic cancer. In addition to her academic work, Dr. Sarinder holds several editorial positions: she serves on the editorial boards of BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making, and is an Associate Editor of the Malaysian Journal of Science (MJS). She chaired the International Symposium on Biomedical Data Infrastructure 2013 and the 4th Data Analytics in Biomedicine Workshop (DAB 2013), organized by IEEE. She has also served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge and as a Visiting Professor and External Examiner for the Bachelor of Bioinformatics (Hons) program at Management and Science University (MSU), Malaysia. Dr. Sarinder is a panel assessor for the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), covering programs at Multimedia University and the International Medical University. She currently serves as a Treasurer of the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet). Recently, she was appointed as a Consultant to Sigma Teguh Sdn Bhd for projects involving Big Data and Machine Learning. Currently, Dr. Sarinder is contributing to the development of a Healthcare Data Safe Haven Infrastructure as part of the AI in Medicine Initiative at the University of Malaya. |
