Bibliography: Professor Dr Wan Haliza Abd. Majid (2021) Dr Wan Haliza Abd. Majid graduated with Bachelor in Physics from University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK in 1988. Initially, she worked in the Physics department, University Malaya as a tutor from 1990-91 while she was completing her Master’s Degree. Upon completing her PhD in 1994 from the University of Sheffield (UK), she was attached to the Matriculation Centre (PASUM) from 1994-2000, University Malaya as a lecturer before transferring to the Physics Department in 2000. Currently, her research interest is related to pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties of organic materials, fabrication and device characterization of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and photo-sensing and signal processing of biomaterials, quantum dots, and their applications. She has participated in many seminars, workshops, conferences and community engagement projects related to the Physics education program. Her involvement in research led her to lead (Principle Investigator) various research grants since the year 2000 which include, Short Term Research Fund (PJP-UM), University Malaya Research Grant (UMRG), High Impact Research Grant (HIR-UM), Exploratory Research Grant Scheme (ERGS-MOHE), ScienceFund (MOSTI), Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS-MOHE) and Long Term Research Grant (LRGS-MOHE). She has been invited as one of the panel reviewers/evaluators for various grants awarded by MOHE and MOSTI at the university and national level since 2012. Internationally, her involvement as one of the panel reviewers for the Slovak Research And Development Agency starts from the year 2016 until recently. Currently, she is the Head of Low Dimensional Materials Research Center (LDMRC) (since 2016), the Chief Editor of Malaysian Journal of Science (MJS) (since 2020), the Chairperson for MASS Chapter of University Malaya (since 2019) and Committee member for Institute of Physics (IFM) (since 2021). She was appointed as Deputy Dean of Research and Higher Degree at the Faculty of Science (2010-2014), Dean (2017-2019) and Deputy Dean (2016-2017) of Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS). She is committed to equipping graduates at the tertiary level with knowledge, technology and values that can be used to interact positively with society at large.
show more »Khoo Ying Hooi, PhD, is an Associate Professor of International Relations and Human Rights at Universiti Malaya (UM). Her research centres on human rights and democracy in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on civil society, Southeast Asian politics, and the domestic politics of Malaysia and Timor-Leste. She also examines how the geopolitics of Southeast Asia shapes domestic political developments, rights discourses, civic spaces, and institutional contestations. In addition, she works extensively on human rights education and academic freedom. She is the author of “The Bersih Movement and Democratisation in Malaysia” (SIRD/ ISEAS/ Lexington Books, 2020) and “Seeds of Dissent (Gerakbudaya, 2015). Furthermore, Ying Hooi has also co-edited several volumes, such as “Social and Political Deglobalisation: Covid-19, Conflict and Uncertainties in Malaysia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), “Marginalisation and Human Rights in Southeast Asia” (Routledge, 2022) and “Rethinking Human Rights and Peace in the Post-Independence Timor-Leste through Local Perspectives” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022). Her co-author paper (with C. Leong, I. Faik, F. Tan and B. Tan, 2020), “Digital organising of a global social movement: from connective to collective action," won the 2021 Best Paper Award at the Information and Organization and was Runner-Up in the 2021 Special Interest Group-Grounded Theory Methodology (SIG-GTM). Ying Hooi is the Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Journal of International Relations (MJIR) and sits on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, the Journal of Southeast Asian Human Rights (JSEAHR), and the Indonesian Law Review (ILREV). Ying Hooi has been appointed to the International Advisory Council by the Timor-Leste government for Centro Nacional Chega! (CNC), a public institute tasked to institutionalise memory and promote human rights. She is also a founding member of the Southeast Asian Coalition for Academic Freedom (SEA-CAF). She received several fellowships, including the Mellon/ SAR Academic Freedom Fellowship by Scholars at Risk (SAR), the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) Curriculum Fellowship, and visiting fellowships at Kyushu University, Mahidol University, Humboldt University of Berlin and Beijing Foreign Studies University. She has served as a judge in several local and international human rights awards, including the Amnesty International Philippines Ignite Awards and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) Human Rights Awards. Between 2013 and 2016, Ying Hooi was involved in the diplomatic training course for the Institute of Diplomatic Studies (IDS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in Timor-Leste. Additionally, she has contributed to consultancies for organisations like the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), the Democracy Academy of Malaysia, and Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research and Education in Southeast Asia (SHAPE-SEA). In addition to her academic roles, Ying Hooi has extensive experience in the field of human rights and democracy in Southeast Asia. These roles include serving as a Scientific Member in the Observatory of Political Alternatives in Southeast Asia (ALTERSEA), Vice-Chair in the Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (PROHAM), and Board Member in the Innovation of Change - East Asia Governance Circle (EAGC). Before entering academia, Ying Hooi garnered experience in corporate sectors and served as the Head of International Issues and Cooperation at the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). Her involvements include the ASEAN human rights body (now AICHR) in the ASEAN Charter, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Malaysia in Geneva and the SUHAKAM Amendment Bill 2009.
show more »Dr. Wong Won Fen is a faculty member at the Department of Medical Microbiology, Universiti Malaya, where she has served since 2012. She is an immunologist with research interests in host–pathogen interactions, immune regulation, and inflammation, with a particular focus on the immunopathogenesis of sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia trachomatis and HIV. Her research integrates molecular and cellular immunology to understand immune dynamics and develop strategies for improving disease prognosis, vaccine development, and novel immunotherapeutic interventions. Dr. Wong received her early scientific training at Tohoku University, Japan, under the supervision of Professor Masanobu Satake. To date, she has published more than 115 peer-reviewed articles, with an h-index of 37 and over 5,200 citations. She has received several international recognitions, including the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship, Fulbright Visiting Scholarship, and the Institut Mérieux Young Investigator Award. At Universiti Malaya, Dr. Wong teaches in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She serves as the Course Coordinator for Immunology in the MBBS programme and for Advanced Medical Microbiology in the Biomedical Science programme, in addition to her role as Ph.D. Programme Coordinator and Quality Management System (QMS) committee member contributing to institutional quality initiatives.
