Professor Dr Gan Shiaw Sze @ Gan Gin Gin is a Professor in Internal Medicine and Clinical Haematology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. She graduated with honours from University of New South Wales, Australia and joined the Department of Medicine, University of Malaya as a lecturer in 2000 after obtaining her MRCP (UK) qualification. In addition to this, she is also a fellow of Academy of Medicine, Fellow of Academy of Science, Malaysia and a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh (UK). Believing in further improving herself, she obtained a Master’s degree with distinction in Clinical Medicine (Leadership & Management) from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2017. She is currently the head of Department of Medicine. She was the head of the division of clinical haematology in Department of Medicine, (2003 to 2018) and was instrumental in the improvement of haematology daycare services and expanding the haematology clinical services including haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in University Malaya Medical Centre. She has also written many guidelines for haematological procedures for University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and spearheaded the well-integrated medical daycare area. Professor Gan is active in Malaysian Society of Haematology where she was the President of the society (2022-2026), of which she remains as a council member. She previously held the position of vice president (2020-2022), honorary secretary (2004 to 2008) and council member (2008-2018). She has played a key role in shaping the training of clinical haematologists in Malaysia. She was the national chair of the Examination Subcommittee, past chairperson and current committee member of clinical haematology training in Malaysia. In addition, she is also one of the members of Malaysian Medical Council Education Specialty Sub-Committee for clinical haematology. Internationally, she is a respected member in the field of haematology. She the executive board member of Asia Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation group and one of the steering committee for Asian Myeloma Network (AMN) and Asia Pacific Myeloma & Related Diseases Registry. Professor Gan has contributed much to the transfer of her expertise and knowledge in her capacity as a national committee/panel member for formulating clinical practice guidelines on management of blood disorders and national policies on stem cell transplantation, which have served as reference nationwide. In addition, she has also been a key opinion leader in Asia Pacific region where she is active member for working groups and committees, developing consensus guidelines for management of haematological disorders in resource diverse settings. She is also actively involved in organizing national conferences and workshops for the continuous professional development for trainees and students. She has been invited to evaluate numerous grants and reviewer for many ISI (WOS) publications. Her interest in research, especially in genetic polymorphisms associated with haematological related diseases, haematopoietic stem cell transplantation & cellular therapy, lymphoma and myeloma has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. Besides this, she is actively involved in multiple international clinical trials. She has been engaged as speaker, chairperson for many workshops/seminars and international conferences. Apart from that, she has also been awarded several times of excellent service awards for her contributions to academic services and clinical services at the University of Malaya.
show more »Dr. Tang Li Yoong is currently the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Universiti Malaya (UM), a faculty established in March 2026. Her academic expertise encompasses Renal Nursing, Nursing Research and Statistics, Nursing Education, and Clinical Nursing. She has extensive experience supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students in both clinical settings and nursing research, and has made substantial contributions to nursing education and professional practice. Since 2018, Dr. Tang has served as an Assessor for the Nursing Board Malaysia, where she plays a key role in curriculum evaluation and accreditation visits to public and private nursing institutions nationwide. Through this role, she ensures that nursing education programmes comply with professional, regulatory, and quality assurance standards, while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of the healthcare system. Dr. Tang’s research portfolio demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing nursing education, patient safety, and healthcare quality. She has led and co-led several funded research projects, including studies on online learning in nursing education (PV039-2021) and psychosocial and behavioural interventions for infection prevention in intensive care units (TR001A-2020). She is currently the Principal Investigator of a Green Health and Sustainability research project, which aims to integrate sustainable practices into nursing education and healthcare delivery in alignment with global sustainability goals. In addition, she has contributed as a co-researcher to multiple university- and nationally funded research grants. In terms of academic leadership and administration, Dr. Tang has held several key positions, including Head of the Department of Nursing Science (January 2024–December 2025), Programme Head for the Bachelor of Nursing Science (2013–2023), and member of the Public University Nursing Board. She has also served as course coordinator for core nursing courses, notably Nursing Research and Statistics, reflecting her commitment to academic excellence and curriculum quality. Dr. Tang is actively engaged in departmental and university-level task forces and committees, contributing to policy formulation, curriculum enhancement, and academic governance. She is a dedicated postgraduate supervisor, providing active supervision to Master’s and PhD students, and a mentor to early-career researchers, supporting research capacity building within the nursing profession. In summary, Dr. Tang Li Yoong is a distinguished nursing academic and leader whose expertise, leadership, and scholarly contributions have significantly advanced nursing education, research, and clinical practice in Malaysia and internationally.
show more »ChM. Dr. Archina Buthiyappan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya. She currently serves as the Head of the Research Management Division (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) under the Department of Research Development, Portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), and is also the Coordinator of the University of Malaya Zero Waste Centre (UMZWC). Her research expertise encompasses green materials and technology, sustainable waste management, advanced wastewater treatment, and cleaner production technologies. She is particularly recognised for her contributions to green adsorbents, adsorption processes, waste valorisation strategies, and initiatives supporting net-zero carbon emissions. Her work is strongly focused on translating scientific innovation into practical, scalable, and industry-relevant solutions for environmental sustainability. Beyond technical research, Dr. Archina actively integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into her work, with an emphasis on sustainable industrial practices, corporate environmental responsibility, and frameworks that support a circular and low-carbon economy. She collaborates extensively with industry partners to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world implementation. Dr. Archina has guided over 10 PhD and Master’s students and has contributed more than 50 publications to high-impact journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Archina is an active member of professional bodies including the Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), Institute of Materials Malaysia (IOM), and the Forensic Science Society Malaysia. As a chemist and sustainability advocate, her work is dedicated to advancing environmental resilience, circular economy pathways, and responsible resource management for a more sustainable future.
