Professor Dr. See Mee-Hoong is an esteemed senior lecturer at the University of Malaya and a dedicated Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC). Graduating with her undergraduate medical degree from UPM in 2003, she continued her academic excellence by earning her Master's Degree in Surgery (General Surgery) from the University of Malaya in May 2011 and obtained her fellowship in Breast Oncoplastic training from 2012 to 2015 in Universiti Malaya and Mahidol University, Thailand. Currently, she is nationally registered as a Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon. Her commitment to medical education and clinical practice led her to join the University Malaya Medical Faculty in 2012, where she specialized as a clinical lecturer focusing on Breast Oncoplastic Surgery. Dr. See further honed her skills as an honorary fellow at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand in 2013, and later completed advanced training in minimally invasive techniques and Cryoablation at Kameda Medical Centre under Dr. Eisuke Fukuma in 2016. In 2022, Dr. See underwent robotic breast surgery training at Chang Hua Christian Medical Centre, Taichung, Taiwan. She has since pioneered minimally invasive breast surgeries at UMMC, offering patients the benefits of early recovery, smaller scars, better aesthetic outcomes, and comparable oncological results. She has also been elected as a council member of Breast Surgical International in 2024, marking significant milestones in her leadership and expertise. She is set to introduce robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction at UMMC in 2025. Dr. See serves as the clinical head of the Breast Surgery Unit at UMMC (currently know as Breast and Endocrine Unit), where she leads a team committed to providing high-quality care to patients. Her research interests span Clinical Breast Surgical Oncology, including minimally invasive breast surgeries and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) in Breast Reconstruction. She has also led the development of Decision Aids in Breast Reconstruction and is actively involved in clinical trials focused on breast cancer treatments, including Minimally Invasive and Oncoplastic Surgery and Intraoperative Radiotherapy (TARGIT B Trial). A driving force in Dr. See's work is her passion for uniting Southeast Asian and Asian breast surgeons through knowledge sharing and collaboration. She spearheads this effort through the Asian Breast Surgery Forum (ABSF - an ECHO Project), which she leads in collaboration with the University of New Mexico’s Project ECHO®. The forum connects 12 Asian countries, fostering the exchange of expertise and best practices in breast surgery. Dr. See is actively involved in various international surgical organizations, including the International Oncoplastic Breast Surgery (IOPBS) and the International Endoscopic and Robotic Breast Surgery (IERBS) societies, contributing to the global advancement of breast surgical practices. Currently, Dr. See serves as the deputy Head of Visibility Unit in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya. show more »Dr. Jamilah Syafawati Yaacob completed her B.Sc (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology & Biotechnology) from University of Melbourne, Australia in 2007, and her M.Sc (Crop Biotechnology) from University of Nottingham (Malaysia campus) in 2009. She received her PhD in Biotechnology from University of Malaya in 2013 and was one of the recipients of the University of Malaya Excellence Awards in 2014 for completing her PhD in less than 4 years. In 2010, during her PhD candidature, she had also won a Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Biosciences & Biotechnology during University of Malaya Innovation and Creativity Expo. After successfully completing her PhD, she then joined the Institute of Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya as a Senior Lecturer. Since then, she has taught and coordinated various undergraduate courses such as Biology of Organisms, Genetic Engineering in Animals and Plants, Cell and Tissue Culture and Higher Plant Physiology. At the postgraduate level, she has also helped in teaching Research Methodology, a compulsory course upon entry into postgraduate studies at the department. Since her employment as an Academic, she has served the department and University in various administrative duties, such as the programme coordinator for Bachelor of Science with Education (ISB), BSc in Biotechnology, academic advisor, final year project coordinator and many more. Her current research interest is on manipulation of plant tissue culture system for biotechnological applications, with special emphasis on stress-induced plant secondary metabolites and proteins for medicinal applications and sustainable production of functional food colorants. Her present research works include projects on understanding and manipulating plant’s response towards abiotic stress for over-expression of valuable bioactive compounds, such as in Azadirachta indica (neem). The regulation of proteins involved in the biosynthesis of these bioactive compounds or secondary metabolites are analyzed through proteomics-based approach, to allow for a better understanding of the biosynthesis pathways that has been affected. In addition to that, she is also working on the epigenetics aspect of plant phenotypic plasticity, to understand the epigenetic regulation (with focus on histone modification) in DNA repair and somaclonal variation. In recognition of her work and scientific achievements, she has won several awards such as a Gold Medal at International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) in 2013 and a Bronze Medal at Bioinnovation Awards/BioMalaysia & Bioeconomy Asia Pacific 2013. Other than that, she is also actively participating in the scientific community and the public by taking on various roles as a judge or jury in scientific competitions and innovation programs at national and secondary school levels. These include her role as a judge for Malaysian Agricultural Invention Show (MAgIS) competition organized by Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry in 2016, and judge for science videos and scientific poem recitation competitions organized by Ministry of Education in 2017-2018, among others. Professionally, she was also one of the representatives in the working group for pineapple planting material for preparation of Malaysian Standard (organized by SIRIM Malaysia) in 2018. show more »Dr. Nur Hairani Abd Rahman has been a Senior Lecturer in Public Policy and Administration at Universiti Malaya since 2017. She holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy from Universiti Sains Malaysia, a Master of Public Administration from Universiti Malaya, and a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Dr. Nur Hairani is highly regarded for her expertise in social policy, with particular focus on social care, governance, social inclusion and exclusion, inequality, and well-being. Beyond her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Nur Hairani plays an integral role in academic leadership. She currently serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Public Administration and Governance and sits on the Editorial Board of the Malaysian Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities. Her membership in the Social Policy Association in the United Kingdom further amplifies her influence on an international level. In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Nur Hairani is actively engaged in administrative roles, including coordinating both the Outbound Mobility Program and the Master of Public Administration Program. She is also a member of various faculty and university committees, where she contributes to policy development and strategic planning. Nationally, Dr. Nur Hairani serves as a Field Expert for the Malaysian Research and Development Classification System (MRDCS) under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI). She has also been involved in consultancy projects aimed at poverty eradication, funded by Malaysia’s Economic Planning Unit. Her international experience includes serving as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Messina in Sicily, Italy. In 2023, she was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, allowing her to join the University of California, Berkeley, as a Visiting Scholar. Dr. Nur Hairani’s dedication to her field has earned her numerous accolades, including the Excellent Service Award (2022) and the Certificate of Excellent Service (2021) from Universiti Malaya. She was also recognized with the Best Presenter Award at the Asian Universities Alliance & Universitas Indonesia (2021).
