Associate Professor Dr Loh Pui San is a Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologist and the Head of Department for Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Department, Faculty of Medicine. She specializes in the clinical field of transplant anaesthesia and perioperative medicine, in particular geriatric anaesthesia. Dr Loh believes that as the Malaysian population ages and increasingly more elderly individuals require surgery at the end of their lifetimes, this is a field that deserves expert attention with equal focus similar to the other extreme of age for children.   An undergraduate Alumni from University Malaya and postgraduate from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, she has worked in many tertiary hospitals such as HKL, HUKM, IJN and Selayang before focusing on her academic career in University Malaya. Dr Loh is also currently working on preparing a national Clinical Practice Guideline for Hip Fractures in the Elderly as part of an expert panel with the Ministry of Health.   Her research interest includes studying perioperative management for major abdominal surgery, transplant, and effects of anesthesia on the elderly for which she has obtained ongoing national and international grants for. In her research involving the geriatric population, Dr Loh has keen interest to study what is best for them when they present for surgery especially in finding suitable assessment to identify risk factors early, institute prevention and provide safe methods of anaesthesia.
