Dr. Saharuddin bin Mohamad received his Bachelor of Engineering (Bioengineering) in 1998 and Master of Engineering (Bioengineering) in 2000 from the University of Tokushima, Japan. He successfully completed his Doctor of Engineering degree in functional system engineering in 2003 at the same university. Then, he took up a post-doctoral position in bioinformatics at Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan until 2004. He was appointed as lecturer in Bioinformatics Program, Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya ever since. His research interest focuses on structural bioinformatics, with special interest in computer-aided drug design and protein engineering. He also engages in molecular bioinformatics research projects related to analysis and data mining of the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data in genomics, metagenomics, whole-exomic and trancriptomics. Furthermore, he involves in translational bioinformatics research projects with his collaborators from Institute of Medical Research, Malaysia. He actively involves in teaching and development of courses for Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics) and Master of Bioinformatics at the University of Malaya. He served as Programme Coordinator for Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics) Degree Program from 2013 to 2014 and re-appointed as the coordinator from 2019 to 2020. He was appointed as Advisory Board Member of MyBioInfoNet (Malaysia Bioinformatics Network) for 2019-2021 session. He was elected as vice president of the Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (MaSBiC) for 2018-2020 and 2020-2022 session. He was appointed as the Head of Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science from January 2020 to January 2022. Currently, he serves as the Head of Centre of Research in Systems Biology, Structural, Bioinformatics and Human Digital Imaging (CRYSTAL), University of Malaya since 2017.
show more »Dr. Hidayah obtained her first degree in Bachelor of Science with Islamic Studies specialized in Ecology and Biodiversity from Universiti Malaya in 2009, under Public Service Department Malaysia scholarship. She then continued her interest in Science Biology at the same university under the National Science Fellowship (NSF), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation scholarship where she obtained a Master of Science in Molecular Taxonomy in 2013. Afterward, she worked as a Research Assistant to expand her experience in the research world before she continued her PhD. In the year 2015, she received a scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia to pursue her PhD focusing on Bio-ecological and taxonomic studies of Malaysian dragonflies at Universiti Malaya. While completing her PhD, she becomes a recipient of short-term International Program Associates (IPAs) under the International Joint Graduate School Program RIKEN, by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Wako-Shi, Japan in 2016. RIKEN is Japan's largest comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines. While carrying out her PhD project at RIKEN, she was engaged in the Enzyme Research Team, Biomass Engineering Research Division, RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science. The research she has conducted at RIKEN to date aims to demonstrate the micro joint wing properties in the suborder Zygoptera using combined techniques of laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) to explore resilin elasticity investigations and analyze of protein components. In 2018, she completed her PhD and started her career as a part-timer lecturer, and afterward, she has been appointed as Senior Lecturer in 2020 under Ecology Biodiversity Programme, Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. She currently teaches Animal Behaviour & Ethology and Animal Structure, Function & Physiology subjects to undergraduate students. She has vast experience in teaching and learning starting as a demonstrator back in 2013 and involved in immense research field preliminary back to 2010 and became a reviewer in several peer-reviewed and high impact journals such as PLoS ONE.
show more »Sarel developed an interest in e-learning in 2004 when he volunteered as a participant in a public university’s e-learning project. Leveraging his background in software engineering—a bachelor's degree in computer science with a major in software engineering—he began exploring the design and integration of e-learning with educational concepts and technical functionalities to enhance student learning opportunities. His first official e-learning initiative, diskusiMAYA (accessible at www.diskusimaya.com), was primarily designed to support his part-time students since 2006. Additionally, he conceptualized and developed an innovative e-learning environment tailored for selected teachers as part of the MAYA project, accessible via maya.ilusikreatif.com and maya.sorient.my. His approach incorporates diverse instructional design strategies, including online learning environments and blended learning methods, to sustain student engagement in the learning process. Sarel has also contributed to the development of a virtual learning environment platform for a private university, focusing on how virtual environments function as collaborative spaces to enhance students’ learning experiences. Now, he emphasizes the importance of experience in practicing digital skills in education as a transition to AI Literacy. At the same time, he is an AI trainer in/for education who has produced several GPTs under the Scholar AI Project such as 'Scholar Proposal Mentor', 'Scholar Bloom's Digital Taxonomy', Scholar Intelligence Report, or 'Scholar UM Expert'. According to him, every engagement provided by the community (either lecturers or students) in the online environment is about building up motivation.
