DR. DURRIYYAH SHARIFAH BINTI HAJI HASAN ADLI

Lead UM Neuroscience Research Group (NeuroRG), a group of multi-disciplinary based researchers focusing on the Nervous System. The focus of each research with its approach specifically suited to its nature: a) laboratory based researches; eg, comparative neurobiology of non-mammalian vertebrates nervous system; animal behavioral model for memory; neurohistological characterization  b) non-laboratory based researches; eg, comparison of issues from Islamic and Neuroscience established perspectives on learning and related factors like sleep for normal and autistic children; coping strategies of Muslim parents with autistic children One of the works being conducted by NeuroRG team is on substances/food that are encouraged by Islam; eg, Prophetic substances -- food like Habbatus Sauda (Nigella sativa) and honey.  Specifically, studies are on the effects of consumption on spatial and/or non spatial memory, neurohistology of specific brain structures and neurocytology of the neurons, and their neuroprotective effects.  Also have collaborated researches on the effects of these substances on other physiological systems, e.g. reproductive physiology, wound healing to skin.  Have received grants from government bodies and the University of Malaya for related researches.  Outputs of grants include publications in journals and books, and presentations at local and international scientific meetings.  In addition, have successfully supervised students at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels (MSc, MPhil, MBiotech, PhD). Teaching include subjects/modules such as Neurobiology, Diseases of the Central Nervous System, Histology, and Animal Use and Care Bioethics.

DR. MOHD ZAMRI BIN HUSSIN

Dr. Zamri Hussin graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) in 2012. He completed his specialist training in periodontics at Manchester University (UK) in 2018, earning a Distinction. In the same year, he was awarded Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK). In 2017, Dr. Zamri received the Dentsply Prize for Best Postgraduate Student Oral Case Presentation, recognizing his insights into periodontal health, treatment, and patient perspectives. He currently serves as the Secretary of the Malaysian Society of Periodontology and is a life member of the Malaysian Society of Oral Microbiologists and Oral Immunologists. Dr. Zamri is a full-time periodontist and lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Malaya. His expertise includes non-surgical periodontal therapy (oral hygiene education, behavior modification, and root surface debridement) and surgical periodontics. His surgical skills encompass root surface debridement, periodontal regeneration, grafting procedures for intrabony defects, gingival recession, and mucogingival aesthetic surgery. Additionally, he performs implant dentistry and related surgeries. Dr. Zamri practices evidence-based, minimally invasive surgical techniques using microsurgical instruments and magnification to enhance patient comfort and improve healing outcomes. His current research interests include clinical and metagenomic insights into promicrobial synbiotic adjunctive therapy, periodontal phenotypic profiling in orthodontics, and digital innovation in behaviour modification therapy. He is dedicated to advancing his field through high-quality research, teaching, and clinical excellence, while also giving back to society.

ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. JACOB JOHN A/L CHIREMEL CHANDY

Associate Professor Dr Jacob John completed his basic dental training in 1994 and subsequently qualified as a Prosthodontist in 1997 and has always been active in the field of oral health care. In 2023, he also qualified as a Master in Medical Education from Universiti Malaya. He had served as a Lecturer at the Tamil Nādu Dr MGR Medical University, India and as a Dental Officer in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia before joining as an academic at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2009. He also holds an appointment as an Honorary lecturer at a few dental institutions in India.  Over the past 14 years, Dr Jacob has actively supervised and guided students pursuing their Masters in Prosthodontics (MClinDEnt), Masters in Dental Sciences, Masters in Oral Sciences and at the doctoral level besides the many undergraduate dental students. He is a Life Member of the Indian Prosthodontic Society, founding Secretary of the Malaysian Association for Prosthodontics and currently the Honorary Secretary of the Asian Academy of Prosthodontics. He has been an active member of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health since 2011 and was recently conferred its Fellowship for his “sustained high level of iADH activity and clinical care for the people with disability, alongside research, pedagogy, advocacy and service in the area of Special Care Dentistry”.  Dr Jacob also works very closely with the Special Olympics Malaysia, as its Clinical Director for Special Smiles, by providing oral health education and care for its intellectually disabled members. As part of his academic career, Dr Jacob has been actively involved in the field of research, collaborating within Malaysia and globally. Besides Prosthodontics, his special interest lies in the areas of Geriatric Dentistry and Dental Education. He is appointed as an Academic Board member of the Federation of Special Care Dentistry, India and as a Board Member of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry. He has to his credit over 50 peer reviewed, international publications as scientific articles and book chapters with an H-Index of 15 and over 1800 citations in Google Scholar.  Dr Jacob is very passionate about Community Outreach activities and he was the first recipient of the prestigious Jan Andersson-Norinder Award by the IADH in 2016 in recognition of his work among people with special needs and the under privileged. Over the years, he has also presented his work at numerous national and international conferences.
