Wenn-Chyau Lee received his BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Sciences from University of Malaya, Malaysia in year 2011, and graduated with his PhD in Medical Sciences from University of Malaya in year 2014. Subsequently, he joined Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN, A*STAR) as a research fellow in Laurent Renia’s Laboratory. He was appointed as SIgN fellow after receiving OF-YIRG grant awarded by the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) of Singapore in year 2018. He joined the newly formed A*STAR ID Labs as an investigator in year 2021. Subsequently, he joined the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya as a senior lecturer. Currently, he is also an adjunct investigator in A*STAR ID Labs, Singapore. As a parasitologist, he has involved in studies encompassing a number of medically important parasites such as the malaria causative agent Plasmodium spp., Toxoplasma gondii that can cause birth defects, Brugia pahangi that can cause symptomatic zoonotic filariasis, as well as several medically important vectors. His main research interest revolves around the immuno-pathobiology of malaria. He has been investigating and deciphering the roles of rosetting (a phenomenon where a Plasmodium-infected red blood cell is stably adhered to uninfected red blood cells, forming a flower-like structure called ‘rosette’) in the pathogenesis of malaria. Besides, he is looking into the potential of applying biocontrol strategy to eliminate different vector borne diseases. He has worked as a research fieldworker in different places including the Thai-Burmese Border, China, peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. As different laboratory settings are equipped differently, he enjoys adapting and improvising facilities available in the field sites to conduct experiments. Currently, he is also the facility coordinator of the insectary and arthropod containment level 2 (ACL2) research unit in the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. To date, he has published (as first/ corresponding author) in a number of reputable journals such as Blood, EBioMedicine, eLife, Frontiers in Immunology, Frontiers in Microbiology, and Trends in Parasitology. Besides working as a reviewer for many scientific journals and grant evaluation committees, he is also an editorial board member of Frontiers in Microbiology.
show more »VGR Chandran is Professor of Industrial Development at the Department of Development Studies, Faculty of Business and Economics at University of Malaya. He has also worked as Principal Analyst of Economic and Policy Studies with Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics and his research interests are mainly on innovation, technology development, trade and globalization that relate to industrial development. His field research covers sectors such as electrical and electronics, automotive, food, chemical, oil palm, machinery, iron and steel, ICT, and the newly emerging sector - renewable energy. He had extensive fieldwork covering the Asian region that includes countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, India, China, Thailand, and Malaysia. In recent years, his research interest expanded into investigating newly emerging enterprises within the context of social innovation and social enterprises, as well as open innovation. His interest has also expanded in studying the issues of NTMs, mainly regulatory and procedural requirements that serve as a barrier for firms to integrate into the Global Value Chain. He has also worked as a consultant for international organizations such as UNCTAD, UNIDO, UNESCO, UNEP, ERIA, OECD as well as governmental organizations in Malaysia. He has published articles in international journals - Economics of New Technology and Innovation, Policy Modelling, as well as book chapters and books on industrial development and innovation. He is the recipient of various national and international grants – to name a few - European Union Horizon 2020 and IDR, Canada, among others. His work is widely quoted in government policy documents contributing to numerous policy changes. He has contributed to the Malaysian regulatory reform efforts, STI and Industrial policy development at national as well as state level. His work via Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Economic Planning Unit, Academic of Sciences, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, MIGHT, Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysian Productivity Corporation and Institute Darul Ridzuan (state level) was instrumental in making the policy changes. His engagement with the industry are mainly in the form of undertaking studies and providing expert opinions. He has received various awards, e.g., excellence in teaching award and outstanding paper award from Emerald and Elsevier. show more »Mohd Roslan Mohd Nor is Professor at the Dept of Islamic History, Civilization and Education, Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. He is currently the department's head, serving from April 2020 until now, and previously from 2009 to 2012. He was the Deputy Director (Research & Development) at the Academy of Islamic Studies from 1 July 2012 to 20 January 2019. Dr. Roslan’s broad academic interests involve Islamicjerusalem Studies, the Middle East, Islam and multi-culturalism, Muslim affairs, religious studies and civilization. Dr. Roslan supervises postgraduate students, many of whom have received their master's and doctoral degrees from this university. He has been appointed as external examiner from several universities, within and outside the country. Dr. Roslan participated in the Study of the United States Institute on Religious Pluralism, University of California Santa Barbara (2010), and has been a Visiting Scholar at different institutions such as Al-Maktoum Institute, Scotland (2009) and Minzu University, Beijing (2012-2013). In early 2020, he was appointed as honorary academic member of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakhstan and delivered an online course for a complete semester that end in April 2020. Dr. Roslan has been invited to participate in international conferences as invited speaker in several universities, locally and internationally. He has a number of scholarly articles published in worldwide refereed and indexed journals (Web of Science and Scopus), and continues to be engaged actively in research. He was a recipient of 2018 MAPIM-KPT (then Ministry of Higher Education) award for book published in Social Sciences category. He also received a prestigious award Anugerah Akademik Negara (AAN) 2018 for book category. The book which he received the award entitled: The Significance of Islamicjerusalem in Islam, published in 2017 by Univ of Malaya Press. He has co-authored a book and published by UM Press in 2020 entitled: Konflik Gaza dan Misi Kemanusiaan Freedom Flotilla (Gaza Conflict and Humanitarian Mission of Freedom Flotilla). His recent co-authored book is Perkembangan Islam di Turkiye: Dari Era Khilafah hingga AKP (The Development of Islam in Turkiye: From the Era of Caliphate to AKP), published by UM Press in 2024. He has been appointed and completed his tenure as a Member of Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) for the period of 2021-2024. He is committed in community services and has served as Nazir (Chairman) of Masjid al-Mukarramah in Kuala Lumpur since 2012-now.
