Dr. Shatrah Othman graduated with Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of Nottingham, UK and obtained her PhD (Molecular Biology and Immunology) and Masters of Science (Molecular Biology) from the Universiti Malaya. She has been with the Department of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya since 2005 and is currently an Associate Professor of the Biochemistry courses for Medical, Dental and Biomedical programmes. Her research interest mainly covers molecular and immunologocal studies on dengue, human papillomavirus, BPA, DHODH and cancers. She is an active member of the Drug Design and Development Research Group (DDDRG) since 2006 and has been heavily engaged with projects that involve the discovery of therapeutics, including natural products, synthetic chemical compounds and novel peptides against flaviviruses. In addition, her expertise in molecular biology has also placed her in several collaborative projects with Institute for Medical Research (IMR), University Putra Malaysia, University Teknologi MARA, Malaysia Genome Institute, IPharm Malaysia and Aurigene Discovery Technologies Ltd, India. She has published in many peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at several national and international conferences. At present, she is the Head of Internal Audit, Faculty of Medicine Quality Management, Universiti Malaya.
show more »Dr. Muhamad Shakirin Mispan is currently a senior lecturer at the Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, teaching BSc courses including Ecology and Management of Weeds, Soil Ecology and Management, and Quantitative Ecology. He also teaches MSc courses including Applied Weed Science, Pest Management in Organic Crops, and Tropical Crop Management. He received a bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Ecology and Biodiversity in 2006 and a master’s degree (MSc) in Biology in 2010 from Universiti Malaya. He is a PhD holder in Biological Sciences from South Dakota State University, USA working on QTL mapping for weedy adaptive traits in rice; haplotype analysis for a major seed dormancy QTL region in rice; and seed longevity and photoperiod sensitivity in weedy rice. His current research focuses are mainly on the ecological genetics of weedy rice focusing on adaptation to various ecological systems, seedbank dynamics and longevity, environmental impact from various weed management, integration of sustainable agriculture for rice production, agroecology, and precision agriculture in rice farming.
show more »Dr. Ng Wei Leik is a primary care physician and senior lecturer at Universiti Malaya. His academic interests include pharmacogenomics and digital health, with a focus on applications relevant to primary care. In pharmacogenomics, Dr. Ng has been involved in studies exploring the role of genetic testing—particularly HLA-B*58:01 allele screening—to reduce adverse drug reactions in patients with gout. These efforts are part of broader collaborations with national health agencies to explore the integration of genomic tools into routine primary care. In parallel, Dr. Ng has contributed to digital health and e-learning initiatives aimed at supporting clinical practice and medical education. In the area of digital health, he has worked on symptom monitoring systems for COVID-19 and dengue, as well as decision support tools for managing low back pain. Dr. Ng is also part of an international research initiative focused on respiratory health, where he contributed to the development of a mobile-based early alert system aimed at improving asthma control using high-resolution air quality forecasts. His work in e-learning includes involvement in virtual patient simulations, interactive web-based modules, and regional e-learning collaborations. He has also participated in the development of evidence-informed e-learning resources for primary care physicians in Malaysia and Singapore. He is one of the coordinators for the university’s postgraduate Family Medicine training program, where he is actively involved in teaching, curriculum development, and assessment. He also serves as a regular research mentor with the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia.
