She obtained her MS.c and Ph.D. from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in experimental physics in 2013 and 2017 respectively. Her research interests are in the area of graphene, nanomaterials, electrochemistry, and biosensors. Her current research project is on the synthesis and fabrication of graphene/natural rubber latex and rubber band composite for sensor applications.
show more »Dr. Ong Tze Chin is an accomplished legal scholar, consultant, and former litigation advocate specializing in competition law and consumer protection law. Her career bridges rigorous academic research with international policy formulation, focusing on the intersection of consumer rights, e-commerce platforms, and digital market competition. Over more than 15 years in legal academia and practice, she has established herself as a trusted advisor to government bodies, international development agencies, and multinational research institutes. Academic Foundations and Professional Credentials Dr. Ong’s deep expertise in consumer protection law is built on a robust academic and practical foundation. She earned her Bachelor of Laws with Honours, LLB (Hons), from the University of Northumbria, Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. She was called to the UK Bar as a Barrister-at-Law by the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn in 2005. Returning to Malaysia, she was admitted to the Malaysian Bar as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2007, practicing active courtroom litigation before transitioning to higher education. Advancing her specialization, she secured a prestigious scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia, to pursue postgraduate research at the National University of Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), where she obtained both her Master of Laws (LLM) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Her doctoral and postgraduate work strictly focused on the evolution of consumer remedy systems, contract law and the sale of goods. International Research Project and Consultancy Dr. Ong is frequently sought after by global organizations to draft regional regulatory frameworks and evaluate emerging consumer risks. Her significant contributions to international consumer policy include: Bioethics and Consumer Tech (2024–2026): She serves as a co-researcher on an international project titled Health-related Smart Wearables in Malaysia: Ethical Issues and Legal Challenges, funded by the Southeast Asia Bioethics Network under the Wellcome Trust, addressing consumer rights and data privacy in smart medical technologies. Mitsubishi Research Institute (Japan, 2024): Appointed as a specialist consultant for KK IT Research Art on a project awarded by the Mitsubishi Research Institute (MRI), assessing Malaysian laws and regulations governing IoT consumer goods. ASEAN Consumer Protection Frameworks (2022–2023): Appointed as an expert consultant by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Digital Market Competition (2022–2025): She led a major Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) project funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, examining Competition Law on the Digital Market of E-commerce Platforms in Malaysia. Fraud Prevention & E-Commerce Compliance: She previously completed a 2019 FRGS project dedicated to constructing national guidelines for the avoidance of fraudulent online sales.
