Dr Hemavathi Shanmugam is a psychiatrist and medical lecturer at Universiti Malaya with a clinical and research focus in neuromodulation and interventional psychiatry, particularly transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS/rTMS) for mood disorders and treatment-resistant depression. She led the implementation of TMS for psychiatric disorders at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Malaysia, in collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and is formally credentialed and privileged to perform TMS procedures.
She completed a clinical attachment at the National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore, with exposure to neuronavigation-guided and accelerated TMS protocols. Her neuromodulation training includes the PULSES TMS Certification Course in the United States and certification in transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) through PlatoScience, Denmark. Her academic interests include clinical outcomes, implementation and health economics of neuromodulation services. She serves as a Committee Member of the Clinical TMS Society Asian Special Interest Council (Asian SIC), supporting regional collaboration and the promotion of TMS across Asia.
